Melvil Dewey Melvil Dewey (1851 – 1931) was an American librarian, educator, and the inventor of the Dewey Decimal Classification system for library classification. Melvil Dewey is considered to be the pioneer of American librarianship. He is best known for the decimal classification system that is still in use in most public and school libraries, but the decimal system was just one of a long list of innovations, among them the idea of the state library as the agency best suited to see to the development of school and public library services within a state. Melvil Dewey is also known for the creation of hanging vertical files which first premiered at the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. While he is remembered for his Dewey Decimal System, Dewey's personal views might be considered racist and sexist today. Even in his own day, his career as New York State Librarian was negatively affected by the anti-Semitic policies of the Lake Placid Club his role in the ALA was curtailed by his overly familiar attention to women

Today Reactions to the Declaration Strengths and Weakness Call to Arms

Reaction to the Declaration Some people pointed out that the Declaration did not address their rights. The phrase “all men are created equal” failed to mention women at all. This issue worried Abigail Adams, the wife of John Adams. In a letter she asked her husband to protect the rights of women. What does the phrase “all men are created Equal mean to you?

The Slave Question In addition, the Declaration did not recognize the rights of slaves. In July 1776 slavery was legal in all the colonies. Thomas Jefferson (as slaveholder included a passage that attacked the slave trade but southern colonies insisted that it be removed) Revolution raised questions about whether slavery should exist in a land that valued liberty.

British At the beginning of the war, the British seemed much stronger than the patriots. Great Britain had more money and resources than the colonies. It also had a powerful military and their navy was the largest in the world. Their soldiers were well-trained professionals.

Patriots In contrast, the colonists had no navy. The colonial army was made up of poorly trained local militias. Few of these groups had ever fought together.

Colonial Advantages Many Americans supported the Revolution. As a result, the British had to deal with hostile citizens. The British also had to ship their supplies across the Atlantic Ocean, which slowed the war effort. The Patriots were fighting for a cause they believed in. Some British soldiers were actually mercenaries, or hired foreign soldiers.

Call to Arms George Washington’s 1st task was to organize and raise more troops for the Continental Army. During the course of the war, more than 230,000 soldiers served in the CA. Another 145,000 Americans joined local militias. Very few had combat experience.

African American Troops One question facing Washington was whether to recruit African Americans. Many slaves were already serving in local militias. Southerners did not want the black soldiers and Washington soon banned them from serving in the Army.

Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation The British Reacted quickly. Lord Dunmore, Virginia’s governor issued a proclaimation on 7 Nov, 1775 Lord Dunmore’s Proclamation promised freedom to any slave who fought for the British. Thousands of slaves agreed. In response, the Continental Army began allowing free African Americans to enlist in the CA, about 5,000 joined.
