Constructed Response Format Answering short answer questions so you get all of your points

#1: Read the question carefully Make sure you understand what is being asked; zero in on clue words. Example- –Based on the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” how would you best describe Rainsford? Give a character trait with two specific examples from the story to support your answer. (Character traits are adjectives that describe a person on the inside).

#2: Repeat words from the prompt to develop a topic sentence for your answer In other words, turn the question into your answer Example – Rainsford could best be described as extremely quick-thinking.

#3: Give supporting information/ proof (details) from text Use specific details from the text (don’t just generalize) and include signal words to indicate textual support. (For example, for instance, according to the author, etc.) Always check to see how many details the question asks for. –Example -- For example, when he is trying to defeat Zaroff, he builds three traps in the jungle and ends up injuring Zaroff and killing Ivan. In addition, when he is cornered by the dogs, Rainsford thinks to jump into the ocean and swim back to the chateau where he ultimately wins the contest.

#4: Wrap up your idea with a concluding sentence –Example - –Quick-thinking allows Rainsford to escape a dangerous situation and become the ultimate survivor on the island.

#5: Put it all together for your final answer –Example – The main character Rainsford from “The Most Dangeorus Game” could best be described as quick-thinking. For example, while on the run, he builds three traps in the jungle that injure Zaroff and kill Ivan. In addition, when he is cornered by the dogs, he thinks to jump into the ocean and swim back to the chateau where he defeats Zaroff. Quick thinking allows Rainsford to escape a dangerous situation and become the ultimate survivor.
