Both men are sophisticated: both lead privileged lives in which they are able to assess the quality of upscale things like silver and champagne.  2. Why would the author, Connell, decide to make these two characters have so much in common? The author, Connell, is matching them for the contest or game that lies ahead; he is making a statement about hunters or about privileged people who can afford to play games’ the fact that they are alike makes the contest more excited.

General Zaroff has become bored with hunting, as he always gets with his quarry or prey. He may be hunting humans as they are dangerous, not native to the island, and can make his hunt different and exciting.
