3 5 Diana Herrington Teaches at Clovis High School Math & Physics Credentials – Loves to use science to teach math – 2011 CA State Science Fair Coach of the Year – 1999 PAEMST – CalTAC member

3 5 Kendia Herrington Teaches at Alta Sierra Intermediate Chemistry Credential Goal: & enjoy the science around them. – Enable students to see – Crazy enough to enjoy teaching 8 th grade science

3 5

3 5 What do scientist do for today’s activity? Make observations – Look at the sand/geological surface – Notice similarities and differences Ask questions – What do you wonder when looking at the sand/geological surface or thinking about the investigation Make predictions – Based on what you already know about geology, what do you observe? – What patterns do you notice that lead you to make reasonable guesses about the sand/geological surface

3 5 What do scientist do for today’s activity? Conduct investigations – How can you find answers to your questions? – Use your senses, tools and conversations with others around you Record data – Draw, describe and organize your observations Analyze findings – What does your data mean? – What is your evidence to support your explanations? Communicate ideas – Share your ideas with others in your group. – Listen to their reflections

3 5 Find Your Beach Adapted from MBA – http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/lc/teachers_place/resources_teaching_activities.aspx – http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/PDF_files/teaching_activities/Find_Your_Beach3-5.pdf Need some sand, containers, and measuring tools – Ziplock bags work for containers Goals – Learn how to measure & use tools – Discover an average

3 5 Find Your Beach Number of grains of sand Average length of a grain of sand 5 mm15 mm10 mm20 mm

3 5 Find Your Beach Discover the average Now we get to use our data! Overall Average grain size by the graph

3 5 Find Your Beach…Extension Time collection or walking – Measure how long it takes to get sand – Student walking a distance Distance with a map – Use locations from river mouth – Create a Grain Size-Distance Graph – Create maps in Google Earth Use walking time to make full story of the trip

3 5 NASA & Curiosity Take knowledge from “Find Your Beach” and apply to Mars THEMIS – Mars Thermal Emission Imaging System Mars Image Analysis (AMU & NASA)

3 5 NASA & Curiosity

3 5 CraterCanyonLayers FaultsFissures Sand Dunes Dust Devils Wind StreaksChannels

3 5 NASA & Curiosity Observations on THEMIS images – Sunlight from left – Scale to determine size (~ 18 km across) – Geological sections – Story of time Q 2 Lab – Qualitative VS Quantitative Data – End of year, what do they now see

3 5 End Effector

3 5 End Effector … Extension Measure for ratios – Circumference of effector – Mass of object picked up – Ratio …Circumference: Mass Change sections – Longer or shorter string – Thicker or skinner string – Different cups Ideas?

3 5 Sharing is Caring All is found on-line – http://www.kendiaherrington.com > Fellow Teachers > Presentations > CSTA – Will be on CSTAs website (after Monday) – Feel free to download and share Present in Palm Springs (Oct 25 th – 27 th ) – Share your knowledge – Get free registration – Enjoy meeting people
