How the Member Experiences IEEE 10/9/20155

IEEE Region 10 – India Industry Day March 2011 10/9/20156

IEEE Day Celebrated Worldwide IEEE Engaging members everywhere in a single day! 7-8 October 2010 75 units participating 6 October 2011 Start your plan to participate now!

The Member Message Focus on the Member, the Result will be Membership Growth 8

Engaging the Member Previous Model Goal: More meetings during the year. Process: Program Committee schedules more meetings. Result: More meetings with the same attendees. New Model … Changed Paradigm Goal: Meetings that better engage our members. Process: –Engage the member.  Survey the members or use existing member segmentation data –Use member data to identify topics of common interest within the member life-cycle.  Technical interests  Student, Graduate Student, GOLD, Member, Senior Member, Fellow, Life Member  Meeting model – traditional, virtual … webinar, Dim-Dim, … Result: More meetings with increased member engagement.  Meetings are focused on member interest. 9

Importance and Satisfaction Based on gaps between importance and satisfaction of products and services – Discounts on professional products and services  Higher priority : R10 (India and China)  Lower priority: R1-8 –Professional networking  Higher priority : R8 (United Kingdom, Greece and Netherlands)  Lower priority : R10 (except India) –Online career resources  Higher priority : R1-8  Lower priority : R10 (except India) –Continuing education opportunities  Higher priority : All regions –Online access to publications  Higher priority : All regions

Meetings – Lifecycle Focus Periodically Focus on Member Lifecycle –Student Members … resume development, interviewing techniques … –Graduate Student Members … technical meeting topics, networking, … –Early Career Members  Industry … networking with peers, leadership seminars, IEEE standards, …  Academic … grant proposal process … –Mid-Career Members  Industry … How to manage people …  Academic … Educational pedagogy, how to run a committee meeting, … –Senior Career Members –Retirees General –Humanitarian events … Green technologies, Habitat-for-Humanity –Social skills … ballroom dancing, formal dinners, … 11

Newsletters – Push or Pull? Traditional Use of Newsletter –Communicate information about meetings. –Call for nominations. –Member accomplishments. Pull –Does the member really find value in traditional newsletter information? –If you build it they will come … Push ‒ Provide member-focused information.  Technical interest vignettes  Employment opportunities  How-to and success stories –E-mail notification upon update –Include surveys  Article relevance and satisfaction  Suggestions for future entries 14

Member Recognition Senior Member Elevation –Recognize your members. –The percent and number of IEEE Senior Members reflects on the competence and prestige of IEEE, its products and services. –Senior Members have higher retention rates. –Senior Members volunteer at a higher percentage rate than do other grades of IEEE members. Process –Identify members who have been an IEEE Member for X years. –Send a personalized note suggesting that their longevity. –Coordinate Senior Member references. Senior Member Nomination Event Guide –Pre-built SAMIEEE query. –http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/senior/senior member_elevation_toolkit.htmlhttp://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/senior/senior member_elevation_toolkit.html IEEE Grade 2008 Retention Rate Fellow98.0% Senior Member96.4% Member82.0% Associate Member 68.1% Student53.3% 15

Conference Collaboration Brings an understanding of the local area. –Section demographics –Industry –Universities –Government Provide cultural perspective and gain potential cost advantages. Transnational growth worldwide has resulted in more complex country requirements and laws. Catalyst for technical exchange between researchers and practitioners from different technological fields. 16

Multidisciplinary Conferences 157 attendees, 22 exhibits, 4 tutorials, 4 three tracks. Region 1 Region 5 Over 450 attendees in 2009 including representatives from over 10 foreign countries. IEEE Region 10 Technical Conference (The TENCON Series) YEARLOCATIONTOPIC 1998New DelhiGlobal Connectivity in Energy, Computer, Communication and Control 1999InchonMultimedia Technology for Asia-Pacific Information Infrastructure 2003Bangalore, India Convergent Technologies for the Asia-Pacific 2007Taipei, TaiwanIntelligent Information Communication Technologies for Better Human Life 2009SingaporeEmerging Technologies for Sustainable Development Region 1 IEEE Long Island Section and its Technical Society Chapters (15), IEEE Region 1, and the Institute for Research & Technology Transfer (IRTT) at the Farmingdale State College (SUNY). Since 1980 The most interesting and pressing problems are inherently multi- and inter-disciplinary Region 10 Opportunity to engage industry and practitioners 17

Disciplinary Conferences 18 Data Driven Engagement –Section technical interest  Section Society membership  Local industry –Engage with Society conference planning committee –Local authenticity  Hotel options  Conference center  Partner program options  Local volunteers – members, students –Bring additional richness to the conference  Local industry participation  Possibility of practitioner’s track Example –Boston Section – Computer Society  Computer Society Chapter  1260 Computer Society Members  World-class industry and universities to draw from  Robust hotel and conference facilities Collaborate and Focus on the Member

Pre-University Long Term Strategy Recommendation #1: IEEE to develop a comprehensive long-term strategy to increase the number of next generation youth pursuing science and engineering careers. MGA Board Member: Vice Chair Member Development Professional Partner Member: Jamie Moesch 26

Global Fidelity Program Recommendation #2: As members maintain their IEEE membership over their years, IEEE must reward them for their loyalty. Rewards ought to be tangible and useful and can be done simply and inexpensively. Create Global Fidelity Programs including: (a) Continue membership Recognition 5-10-15- 20 years of membership (b) Bonus for specific Benefits (e.g., reduced fee, IEEE merchandise, etc). MGA Board Member: Treasurer Professional Core Member: Bill Cook/Larry Bolsch 27

Bundled Society Membership Recommendation #3: IEEE membership (including e-Membership) should include a Society membership as part of the basic membership fee. MGA Board Member: MGA Chair Professional Core Member: Jamie Moesch 28

Student Grants Recommendation #4: Increased support to students in technical activities with grants to attend conferences and organization of technical competitions. MGA Board Member: Treasurer Professional Core Member: Larry Bolsch 29

Pre-University Periodical Recommendation #5: To encourage interest in pre-university students in engineering careers, IEEE to publish a subscription periodical (paper or electronic) targeted to high school students that highlights engineering activities of interest to those students. The periodical should also have articles promoting the benefits of an engineering career and what the students can do in college to get involved with IEEE. MGA Board Member: Vice Chair Member Development Professional Core Member: Jamie Moesch 30

Together We Can Create the Future Engaged Members Future Vision Improve Member satisfaction which will result in increased membership Higher volunteer recruitment, training and satisfaction Measured successes in regions, sections, chapters, and affinity groups is rewarded Members can easily engage and communicate with one another Members regard IEEE membership as an investment in their career

Together We Can Create the Future Engaged Members IEEE Support Local Leadership Future Vision Ensures the right services, tools, products, and programs are provided. Creates the member experience and engagement opportunities in the local area

Getting There: IEEE Support IEEE Support is provided at every touch point of the member experience Goal: Ensure that the member and volunteer have quick and easy access to current information & data to remain continuously engaged with IEEE 10/9/201533 IEEE Support
