Science Project Preparation Practice

Directions: Select just two of the five problems that follow to write a statement of the problem, form a hypothesis, and write a detailed description on how you would test your hypothesis. First read the EXAMPLE on crickets that has been completed for you to get an idea on how to complete the two you select.

EXAMPLE: Do crickets chirp more in cold or warm temperatures? 1.Statement of the problem: Does temperature affect how much a cricket chirps? 2.Form a Hypothesis: I think that crickets will chirp more on dark warm nights, and less on dark cool nights. 3.Test the Hypothesis: Set up three containers each with a thermometer and a cricket. Each should be at a different temperature, but not too extreme. I will then count the number of chirps for each cricket for a period of 15 minutes.

#1: In the 7th grade, whose heart rates recover to the resting rates faster, boys or girls? 1.Statement of the problem: 2.Form a Hypothesis: 3.Test the Hypothesis:

#2: Does temperature of egg incubation affect the gender of sea turtles ? 1.Statement of the problem: 2.Form a Hypothesis: 3.Test the Hypothesis:

#3: Why are there so many angular rocks on several continents at the end of the Precambrian Period? 1.Statement of the problem: 2.Form a Hypothesis: 3.Test the Hypothesis:

#4: Do students perform better on vocabulary quizzes for new terms defined using Cornell format vs. standard format? 1.Statement of the problem: 2.Form a Hypothesis: 3.Test the Hypothesis:

#5: Why are there so many dinosaur fossils just east of the Rocky Mountains in Canada and the U.S.? 1.Statement of the problem: 2.Form a Hypothesis: 3.Test the Hypothesis:
