Heterogeneous network - How do mobile operators exploit different network together to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce operating cost. Yao-Yu Li, Po-Tzung Wang, Ping-Wei Hsieh
2
OUTLINE Introduction of heterogeneous network Global advancements Adoption trend Mobility Management Challenges Market analysis Discussion and conclusion
3
CELLULAR SYSTEM Data traffic demand in cellular networks is increasing at an exponential rate. Link efficiency is approaching its fundamental limits. Cell splitting gains are significantly reduced. Site acquisition costs can get prohibitively expensive.
4
CELL’S SCENARIO
5
HETEROGENEOUS NETWORK One of the solutions to meet the demand. Think small instead of big. A combination with different technologies. It aims at providing the better coverage and capacity, also the high qualities user experience for customer.
6
HETNET TOPOLOGY
7
ADOPTION TRENDS Heterogeneous network have three major components. - Macro cell - Small cell - Network intelligence
8
MACRO CELL Multicarrier - available spectrum and re-farming of spectrum - a cost-efficient way to increase both coverage and capacity. Sectorization
9
MACRO CELL Tilt optimization - It is low cost and a powerful optimization technique - the most direct impact on coverage and interference parameters of the network.
10
SMALL CELLS Mobile operators are shifting their focus on small cells to increase capacity.
11
SMALL CELLS Wi-Fi is already deployed as a small cell technology globally - major mobile operators like AT&T and Chunghwa Telecom - very low cost and resolving the problem of data traffic
12
SMALL CELLS Apart from the capacity increase, small cells could include : - Better latency - In-building coverage - Better cell-edge coverage
13
NETWORK INTELLIGENCE Network intelligence allows mobile operators to manage Wi-Fi access points Intel recently conducted a trail that added intelligence to smart cell
14
NETWORK INTELLIGENCE
15
There are two extremely benefits in this way - mobile operator can cut the amount of traffic through backhaul - user experience can be largely improved
16
NETWORK INTELLIGENCE Caching content - predicting caching - proactive caching
17
NETWORK INTELLIGENCE Transrating video - the codec is transrated in a dedicated node at the edge and then decoded right at the small cell. - the codec is transrated in a dedicated node at the edge and then decoded right at smartphone.
18
MOBILITY MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES In order to realize the coverage and capacity benefits Complexity environments Rapid Varying user equipments Challenges Handover optimization intercell interference coordination(ICIC) backhaul provisioning Self-organization
19
INTERCELL INTERFERENCE COORDINATION (ICIC) Unplanned Deployment operators do not control neither the number nor the location CSG(closed subscriber group) Access cell access is restricted and nonsubscribers are thus not always connected to the nearest BS Power Difference Between Nodes minimize interference -> connect to strongest cell Macro cell dead Range Expanded Users
20
SELF-ORGANIZATION Cells often deployed without operator supervision Self-configuration Automatically downloaded software Self-healing Failure recovery or execute compensation mechanisms Self-optimization Monitoring the network status and optimize
21
MARKET ANALYSIS
22
DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION Increase customer satisfaction and reduce operating cost. Macro cell can promote coverage and capacity. Adding intelligence to network.
23
