 Make a road map of your life. Start with your birth and draw figures or symbols for important events that have occurred in your life up till now. Use your “Idea Inventory” for possible events, places, interests, people, or situations to include on your map. For example, you might put in crossroads at points where you went one direction instead of another. You might want mountains or rivers to stand for times when you faced some kind of a challenge or obstacle. Choose what kind of road it will be on: a six-lane highway, an old country road, or a path in the woods. Will there be twists and curves or will your map look more like a grid sheet? Make this “Life Map” as DETAILED AS POSSIBLE!

 An object that represents or stands for another idea, concept, person, or event.  In general a symbol is a concrete, tangible item, one you can experience with your senses, that represents a more abstract or unfamiliar idea or event.  A symbol gives deeper meaning by connecting the abstract idea to something more sensory.

 The symbols you include on your life map MUST be objects that you would find on a map or in geography  The symbols you choose for your life map should give real sensory impressions to the events in your life that they represent.

 A comparison of two unlike thing that does not use like or as.  If you choose your symbols well and design your map thoughtfully, it should become a metaphor for your life

 Complete the “Idea Inventory’  Create your “List of 10 “ including symbols you have chosen for each event.  Design the layout of your map in a rough draft that includes a key

 Create your final copy – put the key on the back  Write an explanation of your life map. Your explanation should explain why you chose each of the symbols you chose and explain the design choices you made in your life map.

 Present your life map to the class. You will not be required to discuss every item on your map if you are not comfortable sharing details of certain events. You must explain:  the design choices – (setting, layout, colors)  at least 6 of the events and symbols you chose  why and how the event/experience is significant.  your rationale for the symbol you chose.
