LEADERSHIP MODULE School Leadership 2

Purpose and Objectives Purpose Engage the School leadership team in reflection of the system used to lead the school in continuous improvement and make adjustments based on assessment, reflection, and conversation. Outcomes Examine perceptual data from the leadership team and internal stakeholders regarding the leadership system. Develop improved leadership processes and accountability. Develop the next steps to improve the Leadership System. 3

Leadership Triad The Leadership Triad connects Strategic Planning and Customer Focus with Leadership. Each of the criteria have a different focus but need to work together. Leadership Focus How do School Leaders lead? How do your school leaders build accountability and fulfill societal responsibilities? Strategic Planning How do you develop your strategic plan? How do you implement your strategic plan? Customer Focus How do you obtain input from your identified customers? How do you serve customers’ needs to engage them and build relationships? 4

Assessment Session Conversation Using School Leadership Assessment 5

Handshake Protocol 6 Everyone please stand and make eye contact with someone not sitting near you. Connect with your partner by giving him or her a handshake of greeting. With your partner respond to the provided prompts on the next slide. Share your reflections guided by these questions: What does this say to me and my own leadership? Why does this statement strike me as true or false? How would this help our organization improve? There will be a quick share out and then you will move to a new partner and repeat the process with a new prompt.

Reviewing Data Review the composite data from within your leadership team: Customers would include parents, students, board members, or community members. Workforce would include certified and classified employees. Administration would include all administrators or management at school and departments levels. What stands out as an area of pride and what stands out as a possible improvement? Review the differences and similarities from each group. What data statements can you make from your examination? 7

Session One Are we leading with the right stuff? 8

Examining Your School Leadership Meet with four people that have examined the same process. Table Share each person’s design of the selected process and find similarities and differences. What are some of your conclusions based on your discussion? Whole group share What do each of the charts suggest to you? Save the diagrams for notes and future comparisons. 9

Closure Stop Yield Go Individual Reflection: What process from your large brainstorm list would you stop now, slow down, and step on the gas and go forward with? Find a partner and discuss your stop slow and go processes. Share with another group of two. Generate any Parking Lot issues in your group of four regarding the information around implementing a School Leadership System. 10

Session Two Are you walking your talk? 11

Alignment to Mission, Vision and Core Values A key function of the School Leadership System is to ensure the organizational mission, vision, and core values are clearly understood by all employees. Leadership decisions are aligned to the mission, vision, and core values of the organization. The activity of unwrapping is to assist every one in making the improvement tools of mission, vision, and core values concrete rather that just catchy sayings that are not connected to work and decisions. 12

Process for Unwrapping Identifying all of the verbs (actions) within your selected text is an important part to begin to align leadership actions with your mission, vision, and core values. Individually highlight all verbs within the text. Make sure your partners have identified the same verbs. Take a few minutes to reflect on the definition and the intention of the verbs in the context you are reading. Share your thinking with those you are working with today. 13

Session Three Be Accountable 14

Trio Dialogue In groups of three discuss the following prompts: Describe your how your School Leadership System holds itself accountable. Describe how leadership examines results of the strategic improvement strategies and examines results of leadership evaluations. Describe how often the leadership monitors data for adjustments during the year. 15

Closure What successes have you had as a School Leadership System? What gaps does the School Leadership System have and what do you recommend to help improve the gap? What is your personal learning as a leader? 16

Session Four Putting It All Together 17

School Scenario Read the short school scenario about leadership and organizational improvement. Determine the key factors related to leadership that made this school struggle with improvement. In groups of three, discuss your findings and discuss implications for your organization. Share and record the implications. 18

Reviewing and Reflection Review the School Leadership Assessment data and the Accountability Checklist as a group with discussion. Review the recommendations for ensuring your mission, vision, and core values are authentic. Review your process maps and determine gaps in tasks needed to complete in a three to six week cycle. 19

Follow-Up Tasks If you have not completed an organizational profile (OP), complete a draft. If you have a draft OP, review it to help with process mapping. Review data from the Leadership System Assessment after giving it to multiple stakeholders groups. Ensure mission, vision, and core values are used as improvement tools. Continue to refine processes that will yield improvement. 20
