2 Does Greece have all of them? Well, lets see. 7 Characteristics of Civilization

3 Government In Ancient Greece each city had their own laws, army, and own form of money. Also, a monarchy is the only person that can make laws and to rule over the city.

4 Religion The Ancient Greeks thought that the gods and goddesses that they worshiped looked and acted like humans. Also, the Greeks believed in a god named Athena.

5 The Arts The Greeks had the arts, boys were taught how do make pottery. They also painted on Athenian jars.

6 Stable food supply In Ancient Greece, Athenians bought and sold goods at a market place called Aagora. Also Athenians bought lettuce, onions, and other foods.

7 Social Structure In Greece, woman couldn’t vote or attend assemblies. Also, people were forced into slavery as captives of war.

8 Technology The Ancient Greeks used cloves during the time of Alexander the Great. Also, they have great examples of Greek architecture which were represented by temples built with rows of tall columns.

9 Written Language In Greece, boys used writing tablets to help boys learn to write. Also, all Greeks spoke and wrote the same language.

11 Didn’t start from scratch In ancient Greece, the Greek population did not start from scratch, they developed over time. They started small colonies in distant places, and traveled long distances by sea to establish new places to farm, in order to ship food back home.

12 Had Strong leaders with powerful armies. Alexander was a very effective leader of Greece, he united the empire. He was a good leader because he did not want to destroy the local customs of the many cultures across his empire, and continued to spread Greek culture.

13 Developed systems Woman were not allowed to vote, but men were in Greece. Spartan women were supposed to be strong, and they could make their own pottery, unlike some women who had to stay home and clean.

14 Built roads for trade They have colonies all around, and they came to the main land and traded. To trade some people had to travel by boat to get to the place they wanted to trade.

15 Religions Alexander the Great followed Egyptian gods, and promoted other Greek ideas and customs. Alexander used religion in two ways. First he honored the Egyptian gods to show respect. Second he promoted the idea that he himself was a god.

16 Declined/ Fall Alexander’s empire ended after Alexander’s death at the age of 33 in 323 B.C.E. When he died he left behind an empire that crumbled and was divided into three kingdoms; Egypt, Syria in the Middle East and Macedonia and Greece. The End!!!
