17 Class Attendance = One of the ways to collect course points = Lecture events bonus points = Print form emailed to you the day before = Complete the warm-up questions, when included = Turn in the form during the event = Discussion sessions activity points = Participate in the discussion activity = Turn in activity form at end of discussion

18 Attendance Rules = Punctuality is extremely important for all attendance events. = Late arrivals may attend but will receive no grade points. = There will be no late admittance permitted for the SCOOP sessions.

19 MISSING X420 LECTURES MISSING X420 LECTURES = No excused absences - other options exist for obtaining additional course points. = Reminder: The course lasts only ten weeks. After week ten, no grade points can be awarded.

21 SCOOP Attendance = To receive points for a SCOOP session you must attend at your regularly scheduled lecture time. = You can attend a second SCOOP session for extra course points. = Maximum of 10 sessions

33 Laboratory Section = One-time meeting as group = You will be assigned to a Lab Counselor who will meet with you for 20 minutes each week

34 Lab Objectives 1) Discuss your written projects with a lab counselor and have the counselor grade each project on the spot 2) Discuss your career search strategies 2) Ask questions about the course or UCSO services 3) Meet alumni and receive suggestions on interviewing skills and career desires

35 Labs Meet Every Week = Report each week at the designated time for credit = Be sure to send to your CC via oncourse any written projects due that week well BEFORE your appointment time! = Always bring a printed copy of your current project to lab = Be prepared to make an oral presentation of your project to your CC = Notify your CC if you are unable to attend

36 Personal 20-minute Appointment = You will come to lab every week = You will only be in lab for the 20-minute slot that is reserved for you = Notify your CC if you cannot attend

37 PHILOSOPHY Research Outside of Class Self Assessment Exercises/Tests Exploring Options Readings Written Projects on Employment Search

38 Written Projects You can choose from over 20 different written projects. = Required Project #1, your resume, is due at the end of the first week of class. = Upload via UCSO website by 4:00PM this Friday! = Bring a printed copy of your resume to your lab appointment the following week.

39 Project Grading “Sliding point scale” basis = “A” or “B” quality work to pass = Projects that FAIL may be rewritten at the discretion of your Career Counselor = Extra credit may be obtained for perfect projects Do the job right the first time!

40 Project Grade Points Project value Satisfactory = 60 points (normal) Outstanding= 70 points (rare) IF: passing quality AND... Turned in by due date

41 Project 1 - The UCSO Resume = Upload via UCSO website = Bring printed copy of resume to next lab appointment = Projects graded on-the-spot = Reminder: syllabus contains due dates for all projects

42 Required Projects = You must complete Project 1 (the initial resume-Week 1 & 2) Project 2 (career plan-Week 2 & 3) Project 23 (career portfolio-Week 10) to pass the course! = Other than Projects 1, 2 & 23, you are free to choose from the remaining projects to meet your grade goal.

43 Plan Your Projects in Advance = All projects, including the UCSO resume, must be completed in Microsoft Word = All projects must be submitted to your CC via oncourse = See syllabus for details

44 Minimum Written Projects = There are certain minimum numbers of passing projects associated with certain grade levels. = Again, please read the syllabus carefully.

45 Project Grade = All projects will be immediately graded by your career counselor = They will be posted in Oncourse by the course assistant in a timely fashion

46 Project Assignments = Word-processed = Please keep a signed and dated paper hard copy of each assignment = Discuss your project with your lab counselor during your scheduled appointment time

47 Career Network Assistance = Lab #6 will feature alumni and business people coming in to conduct a mock interview. = Use this time for networking and asking for career advice. = Arrive early and stay later on Networking evenings. = Gain grade points

48 Career Planning Today = Textbook: Career Planning Strategies (Fifth Edition) written by Dr. C. Randall Powell = Concepts discussed in lecture will be more thoroughly covered in the textbook = Project assignments in the textbook with clarifying details in the syllabus

49 Career Street Journal = Updated daily, the CSJ contains: - Announcements - Updates - Reminders = Information for bidding for the following services or course segments: - Bidding information for appointments - Full-time employment interviews - Resume referrals - Company presentations - X220 participation activities Always read the CSJ to stay current with UCSO events.
