Advocacy

What does self-advocacy mean? Self-advocacy refers to: an individual’s ability to effectively communicate, convey, negotiate or assert his or her own interests, desires, needs, and rights. It involves making informed decisions and taking responsibility for those decisions. (VanReusen et al., 1994)

How can I become a self- advocate? It is important to know your rights and responsibilities. You need to be able to identify what areas are your strengths and what areas you struggle in. It is important that you know what you need to work or learn the best and be willing to communicate this to others.

How can I become a self- advocate? Be willing to ask for help when you do not understand how to do something. You must learn how to effectively communicate your needs and preferences to your teachers, parents, and employer.

How can I be a successful high school student? 1.Stay organized-come to class with all your supplies. 1.Use an agenda to keep track of all of your homework, upcoming projects and due dates. 2.Attend school everyday. Even one absence can cause you to fall behind. 3.Get involved at school by joining a group or sports team. 4.Don’t procrastinate and wait until the last minute to do your work. 5.Never give up, continue to strive toward accomplishing your goals!

Activity #1 We are going to complete a self-advocacy and self-determination questionnaire. This activity will allow you to see what areas are your strengths and what areas you need to work on. You will be examining your strengths and weaknesses in three areas: academic, social, and personal.

Activity #2 We will be creating two goals for you to work on over the next semester. Please complete the goal sheet based on your answers from the questionnaire. Each of you will be sharing one of your goals aloud to the class.
