Research Questions Are education students learning from graduate level library research instruction ? Do students learn as well using online course management system tutorials as in face to face (F2F) instruction? After having instruction and practice, are students more confident in their research skills? How will students use the various tools provided?

Both groups learned - NSD

Both groups gained confidence - NSD

Did they use the tools provided? Explored all components of Angel modules in the supervised classroom setting. Only one student participant returned to any of the modules after the official library instruction class. When asked where they turned for research help, students were more likely to ask their peers (43%) or their professors (34%) than a librarian (29%).

Are they satisfied? F2F students reported were significantly more satisfied with the instruction they received. No difference by professor or age group (25 or younger, older than 25) What did you like most? (online student survey) video/text options Choosing their own pace “Modules weren’t too long, just long enough” Suggestions for improvement? Fix specific confusing quiz questions

Future Applications Modules remain available in Penfield Library LOR Copy or link to your Angel course Use any or all the components – flexible! Quizzes included for each module Test could demonstrate mastery Convenient for out of class instruction (e.g., homework or make-up class) Other online tools could be imported Course resource guides Databases guides (e.g., Children’s Lit Database)

Angel Demo Brief content --usually video option Try It! Quiz

Using Angel Resources To access Library learning object repository content in Angel: In module choose Add Content Under “More Options” choose Import from Learning Object Repository (LOR) -- near page bottom From the BROWSE menu choose Penfield Library LOR Look for the folder called Education, in which you will find many general resources and another folder called Education Research Instruction. This folder contains all the instruction modules on journal research. Choose the pieces you want. Link or copy, depending on your intended use. Call me if you need help – it’s a little tricky sometimes For links to other electronic C&I resources see: http://www.oswego.edu/~bshaffer
