YOU – IN YOUR FIRST 12 HOURS

YOU – IN YOUR FIRST THREE DAYS

DNA of every one of your cell…

Specialized Cells

Gene Regulation

Expressed vs Repressed Activated vs Deactivated

Genes of Study and their Function Chromosome 2 Actin: cell movement, cell division, muscle contraction AGA enzyme: breaks down fats and some toxins Cellular respiration enzyme: catalyzes reactions for aerobic respiration in the mitochondria Lactase enzyme: required for digestion of lactose (milk sugar) Protein Synthesis initiator: controls the beginning of protein synthesis Ribosome protein S7: needed for normal ribosome function

Genes of Study and their Function Chromosome 11 Cell growth controller: prevents cell from dividing unless more cells are needed DNA repair: repairs damage to DNA, helps prevent certain types of cancer Insulin: hormone that regulates metabolism of sugar and fats Lipase and protease: catalyzes breakdown of proteins and fats in the diet Hemoglobin B: carries oxygen to the cells throughout the body

Chromosome Mapping: Step One Compare the tables of each cell type. Draw a BROWN LINE in the position of each gene that is NOT EXPRESSED for each cell type. These genes are REPRESSED. Note that they are still present, they are just turned off.

Chromosome Mapping: Step Two Determine the genes that are only expressed by a particular cell type. These are specialized proteins that help the individual cell perform its role in the body. They are unique to that particular cell. Draw a single, BLUE line in the position of these unique EXPRESSED genes.

Chromosome Mapping: Step Three Determine the genes that are expressed in all four cell types. This is a gene that produces proteins that nearly all cells need to function properly. Draw a single ORANGE line in the position of any gene that is expressed by all cell types.

Chromosome Mapping: Step Four Now compare the maps and answer the analysis questions.
