4 Noun  A word used to name a person, place, thing, or idea.  Ex: I love apples.  The noun in this sentence is apples.

5 Pronoun  A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.  (I, me, he, she, herself, you, it, that, they, each, few, many, who, whoever, whose, someone, everybody, etc.)  Ex: Riley went to the store. The pronoun “He” takes the place of Riley in the sentence.  He went to the store.

6 Adjective  An adjective is a word or words that describe(s) a noun or pronoun.  Ex: Follow the blue truck.  In this example, the adjective blue describes the noun truck.

7 Conjunction  A conjunction is a word used to link phrases and clauses.  (and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so, etc.)  Ex: Brady ordered fries and a large milkshake.  In this example, and is the conjunction connecting the phrase.

8 Verb  A verb is a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, forming the main part of the predicate.  (ran, crawled, hopped, barked, flew, etc.)  Ex: Brooke jumped on the trampoline.  The verb in this sentence is jumped.

9 Adverb  An adverb is a word or words that describe a verb, another adverb, an adjective, a phrase, or a clause.  (carefully, quietly, slowly, peacefully, etc.)  Ex: We listened carefully to the guest speaker.  In this example, carefully is describing how they listened.

10 Preposition  A preposition links nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence.  (in, on, under, over, below, between, across, etc.)  Ex: Claire ran through the tunnel.  The preposition in this sentence is through.

11 Interjection  An interjection is a word or words added to a sentence to express emotion.  (Whoa! Phew! Oh no! Wham! Boom!  Ex: Shucks! I left my homework at my neighbors!  The interjection in this sentence is Shucks.

12 Quiz One  Please select the correct answer: What is the verb in the sentence below?  Carly swam with dolphins while she was in the Bahamas. A. Carly Carly B. Bahamas Bahamas C. Swam Swam

13 You’ll Get It Right Next Time!  The word “Bahamas” in this sentence refers to a place Carly visited.  Bahamas is a place.
