3 Browse Internet Internet has become an unavoidable component in today’s communication. Recent studies show that in the USA, people rely on Internet as much as other traditional media (news paper, radio, television). Internet can be used as primary source for scientific and teaching material. Overview: Browsing the world

6 Browse Internet The World Wide Web We call it Internet, but in fact it is the World Wide Web, or the web, or www. Internet is just the network, the pipes that connects the computers together, and you don’t want to hear about them. What we browse is some of the contents, the water, delivered by the pipes.

9 Browse Internet Internet Explorer When you first enter Internet Explorer, you access to a default page: the Home Page. On new computer, the home page is Microsoft Network page. The title is MSN.com. The address is something like http://www.msn.com/ Internet Explorer window.

10 Browse Internet Internet Explorer You can change the default home page, you could for example use the web page of Balkh University as default home page. Internet Options tool. 1.Click on the Tools menu and select the Internet Options entry. 2.In the Home Page area, enter the Internet address of your new home page. 3.Click OK.

11 Browse Internet The Internet address But what is the Internet address of Balkh University? The address for Balkh University is http://www.balkh-un.edu.af/ The Internet address is also known as Uniform Resource Locator, or URL. URL: the Internet address.

12 Browse Internet The Internet address The URL http://www.balkh-un.edu.af/ is made of: URL: the Internet address. 1.http:// identifies the type of contents. HTTP is for the web. 2.www.balkh-un.edu.af is the name of the server for Balkh web site. 3.Final / and anything after is the name of the web page in the server of Balkh web site.

13 Browse Internet The Internet address The URL are very difficult to remember and to type. Isn’t there something easier? URL: the Internet address. 1.You can forget the http:// at the beginning. 2.You can forget the / at the end. 3.You can forget the www at the beginning of the name of the server.

14 Browse Internet The Internet address So, the URL for Balkh University can be: balkh-un.edu.af That’s better! Be careful! to save the default home page, you must use the full URL, with http:// and www and trailing /. URL: the Internet address.

15 Browse Internet Web pages are linked One of the great idea of the web are the hypertext links. Each page can point to some other pages: the home page for Balkh University has links for the pages about the different departments, the administration, the sport events, etc. No need to know the URL of each page, just follow the link. Links can go with text or images. Links between pages.

16 Browse Internet Follow the link It’s easy to recognize when some text is a link: Links between pages. 1.The text has a different style, here it is underline, can be different color. 2.The URL appears in the status bar. 3.The mouse cursor change shape to become a hand. 4.Just click on it.

17 Browse Internet Follow the link Use a right click and select Open in New Tab. Internet Explorer creates a new tab. It then loads the page you want in the new tab. You have two different thread of pages that you can follow. Or type CTRL+T to open a new tab. Links between pages.

19 Lesson 2 Manage your favorites

20 Browse Internet There are pages that you like to check, every day, every now and then: news, sports results, weather, etc. These pages are called your Favorites. Internet Explorer can remember the URL of such pages. Your home page is like a super favorite when you go back each time you open Internet Explorer. Your favorite pages Pages where you go again and again.

21 Browse Internet Among the menus, there is the menu Favorites. Your favorite pages Add to Favorites. 1.Click on the menu Favorites. 2.Select Add to Favorites.

22 Browse Internet A window pop up to Add a Favorite. Your favorite pages Add to Favorites. 1.Check and modify the Name you want to give to this favorite. The default name is the title of the web page, in the title bar. 2.Click on Add.

23 Browse Internet Now if you click again on the menu Favorites you can see that the current page has been added to the list. Clicking on the menu Favorites and selecting an entry, you can come back to your favorite pages in one click. Your favorite pages Add to Favorites.

24 Browse Internet So you read Internet and your list of Favorites grows big. Really big. There are Favorites about news papers, the sports you like, some new computer that you want to buy, some help about using Windows, some joke web sites, and even few favorites about the science you are teaching. It’s all mixed up. It’s time to organize that. Organize your favorites Organize your favorites.

25 Browse Internet The exact way you organize your favorites depends on you. You can create folders and subfolders to store your favorites. For example, you create a folder about computer, and subfolder for help on windows, new CPU, printers, etc. You can have a folder for all the news paper you like to read. 26 Browse Internet Click on the menu Favorites and choose Organize Favorites… You get pop-up window with: Organize your favorites Organize your favorites. 1.A favorite browser window. 2.Buttons to create a New Folder; 3.Move; 4.Rename; 5.or Delete a folder or a Favorite.

27 Browse Internet Suggestions for practice 1.Add http://www.tolafghan.com/ to your favorites. 2.Organize your favorites to create a folder called News. 3.Move tolafghan له افغانستان او نړۍ څخه شننې او څيړنې to the News folder of your favorites. 4.Add http://www.dailyafghanistan.com/ to the news folder of your favorites. 5.Add http://www.killid.com/ to the news folder of your favorites.

28 Lesson 3 Fill in a form

29 Browse Internet Some pages contain not only text and images, but also places for you to type information. There are many types of form entries: Fill in a form A form. 1.Pull-down menu. 2.Input box. 3.Radio button. 4.Buttons.

30 Browse Internet Some information are sensitive and should be treated carefully, so they cannot be stolen on Internet. This is the case for your password; they are hidden when you type and must be hidden on Internet. Or when you enter information like credit card, student grades, private information, etc. Secure your information Beware the security.

31 Browse Internet Sensitive information must be encrypted before you send them. Internet explorer encrypts information for you if the page is a secured page. There are two ways to tell if the page is secured: Secure your information Beware the security. 1.The URL starts with https, instead of http. The s means secured 2.There is a padlock after the URL.

32 Browse Internet You type the correct URL but you get a message saying that there is a certificate error. Many things can happen there: Try again using www in the URL; Keys used for encryption must be validated by some Certification Authorities, it is not free; The certification has an expiration date; There may be some attack somewhere… Secure your information Certificate error.
