Stage One - Contractions and Labor Stage Two – Pushing Stage Stage Three – Delivery of the Placenta Begins with contractions to dilate cervix. During early labor the cervix gradually effaces and dilates. Next is active labor, cervix dilates more rapidly and contractions are longer, stronger, and closer together. Begins once the mother is fully dilated and ends with the birth of the baby Begins right after the birth of the baby and ends with the separation and subsequent delivery of the placenta
