Insects What makes an insect an insect? In order for a bug to be considered an insect, it must have certain characteristics. 3 body parts: head, thorax, and abdomen Six legs One pair of antennae An exoskeleton

The head The first part of an insect is its head. The head of an insect is used for eating food, and understanding it’s environment.

Thorax The thorax is the middle part of an insect’s body. It is used to balance and support 3 sets of legs. Sometimes the insect has wings. Wings are also located on the thorax.

Abdomen The abdomen of an insect is the third body part. The abdomen is used for digestion and reproduction.

Six legs All insects have 3 pairs of legs. This makes 6 legs total. Legs help insects crawl, swim, dig and grasp. Notice the two pointed objects coming out of the insects head. These are not legs, these are antennae. 1 2 3 4 5 6

Can you tell which bug is an insect? Click on the bug that is an insect. Spider cockroach This bug is not an insect because it has 8 legs. Yes! This is an insect. It has six legs.

Antennae Insects have one pair of antennae. Antennae help insects understand their environment. This insect has wings that are attached to its thorax. Wings help insects escape from predators.

Take a close up look at these antennae! Hornet Butterfly Beetle

Exoskeleton Insects have an exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is a protective outer shell. This shell protects the softer body parts, and keeps the insect from drying out.

Decide which statement matches with the correct term. Then click on the term to see if you were right. Head Antennae Legs Thorax Exoskeleton Abdomen A) This is the hard outer shell that protects the inside of an insect. B) These help insects to crawl, swim and grasp C) This is the third section of an insect. This is where digestion takes place. D) The mouth and antennae are located here. E) This is the middle body part of an insect where the legs are attached. F) These are located on the head, and help an insect detect its environment.

THIS ACTIVITY HAS BEEN CREATED TO ALIGN WITH THE FOLLOWING 2 ND GRADE STANDARDS… Teacher’s Guide to Standards AZ Science Standards AZ Technology Standards Information Literacy Standards NETS *S *Material is self-authored *All images are taken from MS Office Clipart.

Arizona Science Standard Grade :2 Strand 4: Life Science Life Science expands students’ biological understanding of life by focusing on the characteristics of living things, the diversity of life, and how organisms and populations change over time in terms of biological adaptation and genetics. This understanding includes the relationship of structures to their functions and life cycles, interrelationships of matter and energy in living organisms, and the interactions of living organisms with their environment. Concept 1: Characteristics of Organisms Understand that basic structures in plants and animals serve a function. PO 1. Identify animal structures that serve different functions

Arizona Technology Standards Standard 1: Fundamental operations and concepts Students understand the operations and function of technology systems and are proficient in the use of technology. Concept 3: Use developmentally appropriate technology resources to access information and communicate electronically PO1: Operate keyboard and other common input devices. a) Use devices in response to software (point and click, arrow and enter/return keys)

Information Literacy Standards Standard Three The information literate student evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system. Concept 3Performance Indicators: The information literate student synthesizes main ideas to construct new concepts. PO 3:  Recognizes interrelationships among concepts and combines them into potentially useful primary statements with supporting evidence  Extends initial synthesis, when possible, at a higher level of abstraction to construct new hypotheses that may require additional information  Utilizes computer and other technologies (e.g. spreadsheets, databases, multimedia, and audio or visual equipment) for studying the interaction of ideas and other phenomena

NETS *T Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETSS. Teachers: a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
