4. Trail Building Trails are not free – somebody put them there Somebody owns the land – you need permission to build How do you know you can ride? Are those trails for you? What are you building when you build a trail?

5. Trail Building Requires Land or Water – place of trail location Users – type of use affects design Operators – manage lands and use Builders - accommodate topography, use and location Ian Attridge – 1999, 2002, 2008

6. Trail Training Must Address Land or Water – place issues, environment, soil… User – behaviour and capability Operators – infrastructure and maintenance Builders – bringing best development and maintenance to regular practice

7. To Date OTC Board and Trillium Trail Education Committees developed a list of 14 courses to cover key issues identified by members as being important to trail education Grant Application made and funding secured from Ontario Trillium Foundation to develop and operate a trails training program

8. Trails Education 14 courses include: Trail Assessment Business Planning and Budgeting Construction and Maintenance, Design, User Management Ecosystem and Natural Heritage Emergency First Aid and Wilderness Survival Food and Nutrition GIS/GPS Trail Technology Risk Management Legislation Marketing and Promotion Health and Safety

9. The Trillium Trails Education Committee developed : RFP`s for the 14 courses Identified/located service providers Formed partnerships with service providers Developed course schedules Dedicated web sites to promote the education programs Processes established to find host communities

10. Training – Key Partnerships Finding Course providers and creating relationships with the best trainers Finding provincial organizations to support education development – Ontario Parks Association Finding Education Institutions to Support Program development Algonquin College Finding students to take the courses!
