8 Step 1: Creating the correct mindset Resilience Stress is anything that places a demand on us physically, mentally, or emotionally. It makes us change the normal way we live. Most of us think of stress as a crisis, but not all stress is negative.

15 Last year’s Year 11 students achieved our highest ever English results, with 73% of them achieving A*-C. Can you beat this academy record?

16 iGCSE English: An Overview 60% of the English grade consists of work produced and assessed in the academy 40% of the English grade consists of examination Either: Unit 1 – Grades C-G Or: Unit 2 – Grades A*- E 40%  Speaking & Listening 20%  Writing coursework 40%

17 iGCSE Coursework – Written Work Three pieces, all 500-800 word long, to be completed by Monday 30 th November 2015 1.Assignment 1 – Writing to Inform – A speech with the title ‘How to Make the World a Better Place.’ Students will be able to choose their own topic to research and discuss, for example, racism, homophobia or education. 2.Assignment 2 – Writing to Describe – Students will be writing a description, using an image, title or sound as inspiration. 3.Assignment 3 – Responding to a Text – Students will be given a text about ‘The Naked Rambler’ and his prison sentences. They will b e writing an argumentative response to the text. 40%

18 iGCSE Coursework – Speaking and Listening Three assessments, to be completed by Monday 30 th November 2015 1.Group – Classroom assessed – Students will be observed by their class teacher during group discussion throughout the term. 2.Individual – Recorded – Students will be asked to prepare a 3 minute speech on a topic of their choice which will be assessed and recorded in exam conditions. 3.Pair – Recorded – Students will be asked to prepare a discussion with a partner which will be assessed and recorded in exam conditions. 20%

19 GCSE English Literature: An Overview 25% of the English grade consists of controlled assessments 75% of the English Literature grade consists of examination  Shakespeare and English Literary Heritage 25%  Unit 1 (1½ hours) -Modern Prose or Drama -Exploring Cultures 40%  Unit 2 (1¼ hours) -Poetry from the Anthology -Unseen Poetry 35% The content of this course was covered in Year 10 and will be revised in Year 11.

20 Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar Spelling, punctuation and grammar is now marked in subjects other than English. In English and English Literature it accounts for 20% of the overall grade, but it is also worth 5% of the marks in subjects such as History and Geography. Spelling, punctuation and grammar is a weakness for many students and is a key area for development. Please encourage them to work on this element of their work. This could be done by completing grammar exercises or simply by urging them to proofread and correct their own independent work. Students: start working on this now!

21 After School Booster Sessions Fridays until 4.30pm starting 18 th September Invited students – those invited will be revisited every six weeks. Sessions will be focused on writing skills and personalised for those students attending. Two groups: C/D group and A*-B group.

22 Maths Steering your son to Success! Last year’s Year 11 Students achieved Percentage A*-C: 75% Percentage of pupils making expected or more than expected progress: 84% Overall percentage of A* or A grades: 19% This year’s cohort are destined for even greater things with almost 62% of students already working at an A*-C grade.

24 Support Strategies Revision Sessions – Past Paper Exam Club Sessions will also take place on Saturdays throughout the year leading up to the exam Most able Clubs + one to one tuition Additional Classes – Students have also been scheduled for two extra maths lesson every Monday and Thursday with either Ms Raphael, Mrs Fogarty or myself to solely practise their exam technique. Revision guides & Equipment– All year 11 students are encouraged to purchase revision books. Personal calculators are also available for lessons however students are expected to have their own in addition to a full geometry set. Residential Trips – Targeted students will be invited on a subsidised residential trip in December in collaboration with the English Department.

27 How can you help? Make sure that homework is being completed. Encourage attendance to revision sessions Ensure your child brings the correct equipment to lessons: scientific calculator, pen, geometry set. Celebrate your child’s success in maths.

30 Entry Requirements – The Basics Course LevelRequirements 4 A Levels 3 A Levels 4 A Level / BTEC Level 3 Combination 3 A Level / BTEC Level 3 Combination 7 A* - C grades in full course GCSE subjects. 5 A* - C grades in full course GCSE subjects. Combination of 7 A* - C grades at GCSE or merit or above in BTEC subjects. Combination of 5 A* - C grades at GCSE or merit or above in BTEC subjects. A Levels require a B grade in a relevant GCSE subject. BTEC Level 3 subjects5 A* - C grades at GCSE or equivalent, with at least a Merit or C grade in a relevant BTEC/GCSE. For BTEC Science a C grade will be needed in both Core and Additional Science GCSE and at least a Merit at BTEC Level 2. BTEC Level 2 subjects5 A* to G grades at GCSE (or equivalent) The level 2 programme is run at Harris Aspire Academy
