1 The Middle Ages Learned about things you never even dreamed about! If you want to find out all about the Middle Ages, you’ve come to the right presentation!

2 People of the Middle Ages King- male ruler of a country Queen- female ruler of the country Knights, Crusaders- Noblemen who sought to help recapture the Holy Lands from the Turks. Serfs- The serfs owned nothing. They lived on the Lord’s land, grew their own food, and worked for the Lord of the manor in his fields. They had no freedom, and when needed were drafted for war. Nuns- Religious women Shepherds- tending the sheep of the manor. Lonely and often an unrewarding job. Noblewomen- The ladies of the castle. Monks- religious men Pilgrims- Medieval Christians who traveled to the place were Jesus lived and died. Bishops- noblemen of the church

3 Castles of the Middle Ages Only very wealthy nobles, kings, and other royal or wealthy nobles owned castles. Even if they were different designs, they all had the basic structures. baileys: inner and outer walls Drawbridge : a bridge that could be raised or lowered; usually over a moat My castle is bigger!!

4 lluminated etters Illuminated letters were a very popular thing in the hand crafted books of the era. They usually represented the story or bible verse of a book. They are even used today! Even modern day books use illuminated letters, even though they are not as pretty, or as hard to make. All the illuminated letters were painstakingly crafted by hand, while modern day‘s illuminated letters are crafted by machines! It doesn’t even matter what language!!

5 The Feudal System The way people were sorted was by the feudal system. It determined how rich and powerful you were at the time. The king was most powerful, and his job was to keep land from God, in trust, in return for ruling wisely. Second powerful were greater nobles, who were given land by the king for certain services. Third most powerful were the lesser nobles, who were given land by more powerful lords in return for certain services. The least powerful, or the poorest, were tenants of the lesser nobles; or more commonly called, serfs. These people were given a few acres by a minor lord in return for working the land and other services. Prisoner More unpopular people Serf King Queen
