2 English 2 1. Abdicate- v- to give up a job of importance; to neglect a duty 2. Abound- to contain something in large numbers or amounts 3. Accentuate- draw attention to something 4. Admirably- excellent; deserving to be recognized 5. Affidavit- a written version of a sworn statement 6. Alcove - n. a small recess opening off a larger room 7. Alliteration- repetition of initial consonant sounds 8. Amnesty- a general pardon for those who have committed political crimes

3 English 2 9. Analogy - n. drawing a comparison in order to show a similarity in some respect 10. Analogy- a comparison used to make things easier to understand 11. Annihilate- to completely destroy something or someone 12. Antibody- protein that fights infection 13. Apex- highest point; most successful part of something 14. Appease- to say or do something in order to make somebody less angry 15. Aptitude- a natural tendency to do something well

4 English 2 Honors 1) Wretched- unhappy or ill; miserable or deprived 2) Wane- to decrease gradually in intensity or power 3) Vertebrate- an animal with backbone 4) Xylem- the woody supportive plant tissue that carries water and dissolved minerals from the roots through the stem and leaves 5) Virtuoso- an exceptional performer; a talented person

5 English 2 Honors 6) Wreak- to cause havoc or destruction, to inflict revenge or punishment on somebody 7) Zoology- scientific study of animals 8) Vaccine- a preparation containing weakened or dead microbes of the kind that cause a disease, administered to stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against that disease 9) Undulate- to move up and down like waves 10) Devastation- damaged severely as by a storm; upset enormously

6 English 2 Honors 11) Precarious- unsafe, dangerous, unstable, unsteady 12) Besiege- to surround a city or stronghold with armed forces in order to bring about its surrender or capture 13) Voracious- to be very hungry; to be especially enthusiastic 14) Latitude- imaginary line around Earth spaced equal distance north to south 15) Perseverance- steady and continued action or belief, usually over a long period and especially despite difficulties or setbacks

7 English 2 Honors 16) Vulnerable- open to physical or emotional harm 17) Vacillate- to be unable to decide; to swing back and forth 18) Yacht- sailboat; motorboat for cruising 19) Inclement- unpleasant in being stormy, rainy, or snowy 20) Autonomy- self-governed; independence
