2. A tornado is a cylinder of air that brings a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes are very violent, and cause a lot of damage. For a tornado to happen, the air needs to be moist and cool. Most of the tornadoes in our country use the moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, and the cool air from Canada. The tornadoes brings air upwards, away from the earth. The air going upward, mixes with the air going downward (from a thunderstorm) to get that spiral rotation of the tornado.

3. To cause a tornado, a thunderstorm moving from the Gulf of Mexico to the north must meet a cold front from Canada. In the Midwest - where most tornadoes occur - the tornado mixes from dry air coming from the West, and moist air coming from the East. Tornadoes can only occur if moist air meets dry air.

4. The horrible tornado in Joplin Missouri happened recently. This tornado was caused by the air from the North and the South. The tornado was very powerful. This was because the air was colder from the North, and more moist from the South. All of Joplin is wrecked, along with other towns near it. 153 people lost their lives to this tornado.

5. Another two tornados in Massachusetts happened on June 2, 2011. The tornado struck all of western Massachusetts. Four people died from this disaster. Just like the Joplin, it was a powerful tornado, and was caused by the air and a thunderstorm.
