Runs the city, government, parks, policemen, firemen, president salary, all government employees salary Tax brackets: the more money you make the more money you pay Lowest bracket: you barely make anything…if you have nothing, how can you pay? The tax amount goes up the more you make

3. Who lived in CA in 1834? Native Americans Californios Born and raised in CA Some had money Spanish Dons Wealthy Spanish citizens who lived in CA Mexicans There were wealthy Mexicans and poor Mexicans People are constantly coming to CA

Those who are able to do what you want Collecting money was one of the most important things to the Mexican government Those who had money are who they liked the most. The ranchero and Mexican government was a symbiotic one “If you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”

Land grants gave rise to the rancho economy Wealthy settlers established ranchos on their leand Rancho economy centered around cattle Ranchos only produced just enough to support its residents For other supplies that were needed, rancho owners bartered (traded) and sold cattle hides. Rancho economy depended on cheap labor of CA Indians In return for food and shelter, native americans worked on the rancho.

After the missions they could leave, but many had nowhere to go Went to work on the ranchos as servants and laborers Others went to Mexican towns to look for jobs Some formed new societies further away from Mexicans Fought against the Mexican government Raided ranchos and captured horses
