1 UNIT THREE ASSIGNMENTS EUROPEAN LITERATURE 3.1 The Friendly Letter

2 ASSIGNMENT 3.1 FRIENDLY LETTER Imagine that you were in Munich to hear Hitler give his SPEECH OF AUGUST 1 in the year 1923. Using the writing process, write a letter to a friend giving your evaluation of Hitler’s proposal. Use Friendly Letter formatting. Be careful to base your evaluation on the text giving at least 2 examples from the text and elaborate on the examples. See rubric and sample friendly letter for further details. Your letters should show an understanding of the Speech at Munich and Hitler’s purpose in writing it. Note: A link to the MUNICH SPEECH OF AUGUST 1, 1923 is on the class web page.

3 A Sample Friendly Letter Amy Craig Beasley 223 Normal Town Road Greenwood, SC 29649 September 19, 2009 Dear Jane, I have just returned from an outstanding concert performed by the musicians that made the soundtrack to the movie, “O Brother Where Art Thou.” There were several points that I liked. My favorite part of the show was the song performed by Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, and Gillian Welch called “Didn’t Leave Nobody But the Baby.” I liked the mood of the song and the way the singers harmonized without the accompaniment of musical instruments. Also, I am a big fan of Emmylou. I also liked the song performed by Harry McClintock, “Big Rock Candy Mountain.” His delivery of the song was original and fun. I find it hard to describe the style of his clothing. He looked like a 1940s dandy gone hobo. While the song is a traditional folk song, much of the words had been lost through oral tradition; therefore, McClintock rewrote it. The lovable and delightful melody accompanies lyrics that speak of a dream land for a down and out man. Finally, Alison Krauss with the help of the First Baptist Choir of White House, TN, did an excellent job performing “Down to the River to Pray.” The repetition of the chorus and the strength of the choir made the song. All in all, it was a concert to remember. I wish you had been there. All the Best, Amy What do you notice about this letter that is different from the business letter that you have written?
