For Science

1. When heating a substance in a test tube, always point the open end of the tube away from all people. 2. If a lab experiment is not completed, you should discuss the issue with your instructor. 3. After completing an experiment, all chemical wastes should be disposed of according to your instructor’s directions. 4. If you do not understand a direction or part of a lab procedure, you should ask the instructor before proceeding.

5. If you wear contact lenses in the school laboratory, advise you science instructor that you wear contact lenses. 6. Approved eye protection devices ( such as goggles) are worn in the laboratory any time chemicals, heat, or glassware are used. 7. If a lab fire erupts, immediately notify your instructor. 8. Flammable materials, like alcohol, should never be dispensed or used near an open flame.

9. The best footwear in the laboratory is close-toed shoes. 10. In a laboratory the following should not be worn: loose clothing, dangling jewelry, sandals. 11. Long hair in the laboratory must be tied back or kept out of the way with a hair band, or pin. 12. Personal eyeglasses do NOT provide as much protection as a face shield, safety glasses, or splash-proof goggles.

13. You want to place a piece of glass tubing into a rubber stopper after the tubing has been polished and cooled. This is best done by: lubricating the tubing with glycerin or water, using a towel or cotton gloves for protection, and then twisting the tubing and stopper carefully. 14. When gathering glassware and equipment for an experiment, you should read all of the directions carefully, examine the glassware for chips or cracks, and clean any glassware that appears dirty. 15. You have been injured in the lab (cuts, burns, etc.), first you should tell the science instructor at once. 16. You are heating a piece of glass and now you want to pick it up. You should use tongs.
