2 Lab Safety Mr. D. Mader Kaukauna High School ‘To ask me to overlook even a simple safety violation would be asking me to lower my attitude toward the value of your life.’

3 Clothing Safety Equipment used: –Goggles –Worn any time chemicals, heat or glassware is used –Aprons –Gloves – Contacts- Advise Instructor & follow their directions

4 What should NOT be worn in the lab –Loose Hair (tie it back) –Baggy clothing (remove or tie it) –Jewelry (can react w/ chemicals) –Shorts/Skirts/Skorts Legs need to be covered –Open toed-shoes/sandals (closed-toe shoes best)

5 Behavior Horseplay Watch for your lab partner Have your lab materials with you Listen to and follow the instructor’s directions Read the lab before you conduct it If you do not understand something: ASK

6 FOOD & DRINK NOT ALLOWED Do NOT get it out of your back pack Do NOT try to sneak a bite/drink during class It will be disposed of by me if you get it out

7 Labeling & MSDS Labels need to be placed on containers M aterial S afety D ata S heet –These provide known hazards, safety equipment to be worn, 1 st aid info, & disposal methods for a given chemical Fire HealthReactivity Protective equip.

8 Mixing Solutions ALWAYS add acids & bases TO water Only mix chemicals that you have approval to mix Know the hazards of the chemicals you are using. Consider all chemicals to be dangerous and treat accordingly. DO NOT return unused chemicals in their original containers

9 Chemical spills Tell your instructor immediately Let your instructor know what has been spilled Follow directions of the instructor as to how to clean up the material(s) Neutralize Acids & Bases as instructed –E.g. On your skin, rinse with water, otherwise –Acids with WEAK bases –Bases with WEAK acids

10 Eye wash If material enters your eyes: 1.Turn eye wash on 2.Place your face in the water stream 3.Using fingers, keep your eyes open 4.If chemicals in eyes, keep washing eyes for 15 minutes or otherwise instructed

11 Emergency Shower If a large chemical spill occurs on a person: 1.Go to the drench shower 2.Pull down lever 3.Remove clothing that has chemical(s) on it

12 Fire Hazards If a fire starts, tell your Instructor Immediately!! Keep alcohol & other flammable compounds away from open flame Only turn on the gas when it is being used to produce flame with a bunsen burner or otherwise instructed by your Teacher Know where the fire extinguishers & fire blankets are located in the room

14 Glassware Inspect before using Do NOT use chipped or cracked equipment Use tongs to pick it up when it has been heated POINT open end AWAY from people when heating DO NOT Remember, Hot and Cold glassware looks the same Which is hot & which is cold?

15 Steps for placing glass tubing in a stopper 1.Lubricate the tubing with water 2.Use a towel or gloves for protection 3.Twist tubing and stopper carefully

16 Fire Extinguisher & Blanket To use an extinguisher, remember PASS: P ull the pin A im at the base of the fire S queeze the trigger S weep back & forth Fire blankets should be placed over a person/object that has caught fire Only use on “trash- can” sized fires

17 Cleaning up the lab Everyone is responsible for cleaning. If needed, clean lab area BEFORE you use it Work areas should be kept clean and safe After lab, wash your hands

18 Remember: Be Safe and Learn, It could be your life that is saved As the wise teacher Yoda says: ‘Try not! Do. Or do not. There is no try.’
