Robinson Crusoe Engagement activity

Crusoe, a sailor, was the sole survivor of a shipwreck, and escaped to a deserted island off South America in a small boat. Daniel Defoe’s most famous novel, The Life and Strange and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, was published in 1719. Engagement activity

Crusoe brought as many things as possible from the wrecked ship - things that would be useful later to him. Engagement activity

Crusoe began to develop talents that he had never used in order to provide himself with necessities. Engagement activity

By salvaging needful things from the ship, Crusoe manages to survive on the island. He stayed in the island 28 years, two months and nineteen days. Engagement activity

Using his problem-solving skills, Crusoe adapted into his alien environment.

Think about and then list some of the tasks that Crusoe would have to complete in order to survive on a deserted island. Crusoe needed to: Ex. Build a ……… Find ……. Collect…… Exploration

Practice Scenario You have just washed up on shore after you ran your boat into a reef. You’re confident you’ll eventually be rescued, but you also realize that you may have to survive on your own for a month or so before that happens. Exploration

A quick survey tells you that the island is only about the size of a football field and fairly flat with only a few palm trees. The good news, though, is that there are a lot of coconuts and even some oranges that have washed up on shore. Exploration

You’ve found a few items that have washed up on the island that should be helpful. These include: 1 sheet 4' x 8' of exterior plywood 1 Knife (rusty, but usable) A few small pieces of driftwood AND Exploration

6 - 4' x 4' pallets (pallets are slats of wood fastened together, typically used in shipping -- assume the pallets will block rain and the sun well enough to be used as walls but not as a roof) Exploration

The Challenge Groups will present their ideas for a shelter. a. You must decide how to build the shelter from the supplies you’ve found. b. Your team must make a drawing of the shelter along with a one or two paragraph description to explain what you made and why you made it the way you did. c. Groups will present their ideas for a shelter. Exploration

Identify Assumptions Your solution may depend on the details of the island environment. Decide what the island is like as a group and write a short paragraph describing it. Include things like the climate, ground conditions, tree arrangement, and other vegetation. Exploration

Solve the problem Discuss and sketch several possible solutions Share ideas and select the best. Explain the solution in a second paragraph. Draw one or more clear pictures showing how the shelter would look. This will be scanned and shown to the class. Exploration
