What Are 21st-Century Skills? Learning to collaborate with others and connect through technology are essential skills in a knowledge-based economy. ATC21S started with a group of more than 250 researchers across 60 institutions worldwide who categorized 21st-century skills internationally into four broad categories: Ways of thinking. Creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making and learning Ways of working. Communication and collaboration Tools for working. Information and communications technology (ICT) and information literacy Skills for living in the world. Citizenship, life and career, and personal and social responsibility

The Mission Statement (MDE Website) The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

21 st Century Interdisciplinary Themes In addition to these subjects, we believe schools must move beyond a focus on basic competency in core subjects to promoting understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects: Global Literacy Civic Literacy Environmental Literacy Health Literacy Financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial literacy

Global Literacy Using 21st century skills to understand and address global issues

Understanding the local and global implications of civic decisions A Reflection on “Spying” by Payton Hudson One day we talked about spying. The United States has been listening to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s private calls, so Germany got mad with us. We have been friends with Germany for years, so it probably wasn’t a good idea to spy on them. They found out because Edward Snowden told the United States’ secrets. We are sort of mad at Russia because they took him in for asylum. He would get arrested and taken to court if he came back to the United States. One of the countries we really don’t trust is North Korea. They probably want to bomb us. Kim Jung Un is the First Secretary of North Korea. (Long Beach 3 rd Grader)
