1 Semester Project Helpful Hints: 5 THEMES OF GEO Place: describe it physically & culturally Location: make sure you have absolute and relative example Region: Types of regions are physical, language, religion, ethnicity, climate, agricultural, political, economic (U.S. and Canada make up a language region because they both speak English; Quebec is a region that has French language speakers; the mid-west is the Cornbelt region because they grow a lot of corn; The Piedmont region on the east coast has similar vegetation and elevation) Movement: can be people moving (transportation), goods (trade), international business with other countries (globalization), ideas spreading (Spanish colonizers brought language and religion to Latin America Human Environment Interaction: what has people from that place done to change or adapt the environment to better fit their needs and/or benefit from it? Annotated Map of the Region All maps need to be colored, it says this in the instructions. Map annotations (drawings) need to be explained on a separate paper (also on instructions). You are required 10 annotations in the categories of Agriculture, History, Current Events, Resources, Culture. Because there are 5 things, go ahead and do 2 for each category. 2 agriculture, 2 history, 2 current events, 2 resources, 2 culture = 10 map annotations TimelineDon’t forget: your 5 annotated pictures (color them, it shows effort), identify events as political, economic, and social (P, S, OR E is fine, and sometimes the event is more than one of these). Make sure pictures for annotations are all different (don’t draw 5 flags, BORING!) Also, this timeline is for the ENTIRE REGION, not just one country.

2 Semester Project Helpful Hints: Political Cartoon Color you picture (shows effort). Don’t forget: explain the message of the cartoon on either the back or another piece of paper. Be thoughtful and thorough in your explanation!!! Have symbolism. If you were making about the impact of corruption don’t just draw a speech bubble saying “I’m corrupt!”…make the person looking at the cartoon THINK! Demographic Extremes The three observations need to be more than just, “Chile’s life expectancy is 75.” I KNOW, I SAW THAT ON YOUR CHART. The observations need to be inferences about the data. What do you learn about the country or region by looking at the data and how does it confirm what you already know about the place? “Haiti’s GDP and literacy rates are the lowest on the chart and this could be linked to the fact that they have the most corruption in Latin America and probably are not efficiently helping their citizens.” Issue AnalysisOnly choose one issue to analyze. Find an article with facts and statistics and true stories to back up why you chose that issue as the worst problem. The one issue is for the whole region. (for example: for Europe just choose one issue, do not do an issue for North, South, West, and East Europe, that would be doing 4 issues…ONLY CHOOSE ONE. MiscellaneousPut your papers hole punched in a binder or 3 ring folder. Take pride in your work and show me you have taken time to be thoughtful and investigative. It is very obvious which ones are projects that are thrown together and the grade reflects that. PLEASE. READ. THE. INSTRUCTIONS.
