1 Regions of Knowledge: Synergies in EU Funding Opportunities Regions of Knowledge: Synergies in EU Funding Opportunities for Research, Development & Innovation for Research, Development & Innovation How to Raise Regional Marine Research-driven Clusters at International Level Bruxelles, 9th October 2008 Bruxelles, 9th October 2008 Gabriele Gatti Director Institutional Relations AREA Science Park – Trieste (I)

2 Enabling Technological Progress and Industrial Innovation Enabling Technological Progress and Industrial Innovation Summary Overview An effective approach to manage European Structural Funds to raise the maritime industry sector by networking Regional Marine Research-driven Clusters at International Level will be introduced Introduction A brief description of AREA Science Park and its regional context, as promoter of the innovation networking project STARNETregio (Regions of Knowledge), will be provided Background The rationale of the project STARNETregio will be described. Special focus will be given on the successful project NOVAregio (Regions of Knowledge), that has contributed to enrich the European debate on the role of regions as driving forces for innovation Major issues and Conclusions This section aims to underline the future outlook to be developed by the STARNETregio project

3 Innovation Innovation can be effectively developed and diffused through specialized regional structured systems Regional Clusters for Innovation Enabling Technological Progress and Innovation Innovation Innovation is considered the key factor for fostering territory economic growth and increasing the industry competitiveness on the global market Innovation Innovation has a regional dimension, as widely recognized from the European innovation policies Introduction

4 Enabling Technological Progress and Innovation Enabling Technological Progress and Innovation Regional Clusters for Innovation Regional Clusters Regional Clusters consist of co-located and linked Regional Authorities Academia and RTD Institutes Industries Financial Organizations Institutions for Collaboration Regional Clusters Regional Clusters are sources of innovation and wealth since they facilitate the development of common visions and thus contribute to achievement of common goals enhance the competitiveness of participating firms through the rapid diffusion of knowledge and expertise facilitate innovations and bring them to market maturity represent an efficient instrument for the concentration of resources act as a bridge-head in promoting interregional collaboration and research-industry networking

5 Science and Technology Parks Science and Technology Park (STP) A Science and Technology Park (STP) is an organisation managed by specialised professionals, whose main aim is to increase the wealth of its community by promoting the culture and diffusion of innovation and the competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge- based institutions. STP To enable these goals to be met, an STP stimulates and manages the flow of knowledge and technology amongst universities, R&D institutions, companies and market; facilitates the creation and growth of innovative companies through incubation and spin-off processes; and provides other value-added services together with high quality spaces and facilities IASP Source Science and Technology Parks Science and Technology Parks are effective Regional Clusters for Innovation Science and Technology Parks Science and Technology Parks are effective Regional Clusters for Innovation

8 Regions of Knowledge Research-driven Clusters Research-driven Clusters are clusters where RTD is the power engine that drives the development of industry innovation and competitiveness Suitable regional investment policies concerning RTD and innovation for competitiveness into the global market are needed and have to focus on interregional clustering and networking cities and regions in order to internationally enhance the level of integration between research and industry and the capability to develop and manage innovation The European program Regions of Knowledge paves the way to drive the European regions in sharing and adopting the best innovation practices and policies as well as to build up networks of regional Research-driven Clusters Research-driven Clusters are clusters where RTD is the power engine that drives the development of industry innovation and competitiveness Suitable regional investment policies concerning RTD and innovation for competitiveness into the global market are needed and have to focus on interregional clustering and networking cities and regions in order to internationally enhance the level of integration between research and industry and the capability to develop and manage innovation The European program Regions of Knowledge paves the way to drive the European regions in sharing and adopting the best innovation practices and policies as well as to build up networks of regional Research-driven Clusters Background

9 Regions of Knowledge The Marine Sector in Europe Marine and Shipbuilding Industry The Marine and Shipbuilding Industry is strategic in a number of EU member states and for the European Union as a whole Shipbuilding Industry More than 150 shipyards in the EU, approximately 40 of them active in the global market of large sea-going commercial vessels European Marine Equipment Industry An annual turnover of the EU shipbuilding industry amounting to more than 11.5 billion Euro and over 350,000 people directly employed by yards and marine equipment industry Looking into the future networks of Research-driven Clusters The competitive advantage of the EU in the marine industry sector needs to be sustained by increasing joint research and technology development and by raising and adopting regional innovation policies based on networks of Research-driven Clusters Marine and Shipbuilding Industry The Marine and Shipbuilding Industry is strategic in a number of EU member states and for the European Union as a whole Shipbuilding Industry More than 150 shipyards in the EU, approximately 40 of them active in the global market of large sea-going commercial vessels European Marine Equipment Industry An annual turnover of the EU shipbuilding industry amounting to more than 11.5 billion Euro and over 350,000 people directly employed by yards and marine equipment industry Looking into the future networks of Research-driven Clusters The competitive advantage of the EU in the marine industry sector needs to be sustained by increasing joint research and technology development and by raising and adopting regional innovation policies based on networks of Research-driven Clusters
