Pervasive IT concerns in office environments
Complexity Complexity due to disparate hardware Hardware sprawl and lack of space Proliferation and complexity of systems management tools Inefficiency Higher IT costs and total cost of ownership System downtime for maintenance Remote systems management inconsistent with data centre tools IT rigidity Insufficient scalability to handle performance spikes or support business growth Power incompatibility High noise levels Customer conversations motivated Dell to engineer an unprecedented new platform, designed specifically to address and resolve IT concerns in current office environments. Offices experiencing the common challenges that Dell PowerEdge VRTX now solves range from single, standalone offices to the multiple distributed offices of large enterprises and public organisations, often referred to as ROBOs (remote offices/branch offices). Single offices to consider for this new solution include, but certainly are not limited to, medical offices, legal firms, smaller scale school districts, and offices of independent contractors, insurance agents, financial planners or realtors. Distributed offices to consider for this new solution include, but certainly are not limited to, clinics and hospitals of regional medical centres; warehouses and logistics offices of shipping and distribution companies; outlets of a national retail chain; hotels and restaurants of regional and national enterprises in the hospitality industry; as well as the various departments and buildings on a university campus. Many of the IT pain points experienced in single offices and ROBOs are also experienced in many data centres: Insufficient performance to process jobs or transactions quickly Insufficient capacity to grow over time with minimal disruption Difficulty ensuring that systems, applications and data are highly available Trying to monitor and manage systems to ensure smooth and reliable operation but having to wrestle with multiple tools and consoles to do so Remote management was also considered in Dell PowerEdge VRTX design and development, including: Monitoring and managing IT resources to ensure system health and smooth operation requires technical skills and time that most small business owners and office workers simply don’t have. Even though a service provider might be “just a phone call away,” the response and fix time can result in downtime, as well as lost sales, revenue and customers. Systems management solutions that help service providers more quickly identify and resolve problems help keep these offices open for business. Tools and solutions that further help service providers perform these tasks remotely are even better, because they remove downtime due to required travel. Many ROBO offices have already implemented remote systems management. However, a centralised solution like Dell PowerEdge VRTX can cut down on the number of tools and consoles needed to manage remote systems and greatly simplify systems management. Updating is simple since PowerEdge VRTX easily integrates with the current solutions used in your customers' data centres. Your PowerEdge customers already using Chassis Management Controller (CMC) to manage blades in the data centre will be able to use the same look and feel and intuitive interface when managing their remote PowerEdge VRTX systems. Consequently, IT administrators can continue using their installed solutions, leverage existing skills and protect their investment in established system management solutions. The new Geographic View for PowerEdgeVRTX tool, part of the Dell OpenManage™ Essentials console, provides instant, at-a-glance awareness of remote PowerEdge VRTX systems locations and health. If you are a service provider, you can easily monitor PowerEdge VRTX systems at your customers’ sites without having to leave your own offices. This is not only convenient for you; it also reduces downtime for your customers. Earlier detection of remote system issues enables you to begin problem diagnostics and resolutions faster. PowerEdge VRTX systems management is integrated into major third-party management solutions, including Microsoft® Systems Center, VMware vCenter and BMC® PATROL. Other pain points considered and solved with the development of this unique solution, include: Power Data centres typically use high-line power ( volt) while offices have low-line power (110 volt). Distributing data centre hardware to office environments can require costly re-wiring of the office for high-line power. An IT solution like PowerEdge VRTX that can run on the existing 110 volt power in offices can make costly re-wiring unnecessary. Acoustics Loud IT systems can be disruptive in the office, lower productivity and have a negative impact on customer service. PowerEdge VRTX requirements are to meet the Category 3 Acoustic specification for limited configurations. Category 3 is defined as a general use area, such as a printer in a common office area, but not directly at someone‘s desk. Requirements at Category 3 are idle configurations ≤ 5.8 bels and active configurations ≤ 6.1 bels. ISO acoustical standards such as ISO7779 and ISO9296 mandate temperature at 23 +/-2 degrees C. Therefore the ambient temperature for Category 3 projections is at 25 degrees C, since the environment is a general office area. Testing is currently underway to determine what PowerEdge VRTX configurations meet which acoustic categories. Footprint Offices don’t have a lot of space, either on the main floor or in back rooms or IT closets. Consequently, hardware platforms that are right-sized for offices, that can conveniently sit beside a desk or under a countertop, can go a long way to eradicating hardware sprawl and reducing cabling “spaghetti”. This not only frees up space, it can improve the appearance of offices and remove potential for accidents, which could result in downtime. Security There is a locking bezel for the front of the chassis to secure drives and server nodes. There is also a Kensington lock notch in the rear of the PowerEdge VRTX chassis, so that the actual server can be cable locked to an immovable object.

PowerEdge VRTX solution scenario: Small legal office
Scenario: A growing legal practice continues to add new staff and needs a more flexible IT solution that supports the growing practice. Specifically, they need to improve collaboration between associates and clients, improve case reporting and archiving, and ensure confidentiality of client information. Problem: Unfulfilled IT goals Reduce floor space taken by hardware sprawl. Adopt an IT platform that grows with the business. Boost system uptime by reducing service provider response time. Enhance client service with faster, more reliable access to client data. Reduce noise. Solution: PowerEdge VRTX IT floor space is reduced, improving appearance and freeing up room for new purposes. Easy compute and storage scalability is just an insertion away to support business growth. Geographic View and Dell OpenManage solutions enable the service provider to detect and resolve issues remotely and quickly, eliminating travel time to the legal office. Large, shared internal storage capacity and exceptional performance improve client service, without the cost and complexity of a storage area network (SAN). Noise levels are reduced, improving staff productivity. Note: The scenario on this slide is anecdotal. Real-world example from the PowerEdge VRTX early evaluation program will be provided when available after release. Small legal office Scenario This successful legal partnership has grown since inception due to creative work and business integrity. IT challenges have come with that growth. Originally starting with a single server, the practice now has three servers and with their growth rate, they expect to add a fourth in the future. The three servers were positioned beside three different desks, but the need for shared data led them to install a storage box and tie it together on a SAN. Cabling distance limitations required that the servers and storage be together. All this equipment takes a considerable amount of floor space and with the expectation of adding an additional server, they don’t know how they will fit it in. The equipment also produces a distracting level of noise in their office. Furthermore, managing all this equipment has turned out to be a time-consuming headache, especially since none of the lawyers or staff are IT specialists. The backbone of this firm’s success has been caring for their clients. The firm prides itself in responsive client service, which requires fast and reliable access. With many off-site meetings and court appearances, the firm also needs to make better use of staff time and they have come to rely on mobile access to information back in their office. The need for reliable remote access combined with frequent electronic transfer of documents to and from courthouses, insurance companies and clients, heightens their concern about network security. Problem/Solution IT issue: They need to simplify systems management so they can spend more time on their business. PowerEdge VRTX solution: CMC for PowerEdge VRTX brings management of servers, storage and networking into a unified, intuitive tool which saves time and reduces potential for error (and thus, system downtime). IT issue: They need to reduce the amount of floor space taken by hardware sprawl. PowerEdge VRTX solution: Eradicate hardware sprawl and free up floor space by bringing up to four servers plus shared storage and networking into a single, tower-sized platform. IT issue: They need systems that scale easily instead of having to add new boxes. PowerEdge VRTX solution: With extensive performance headroom and storage capacity, PowerEdge VRTX scales with your customers as they grow. PowerEdge VRTX is also engineered for the next generation of PowerEdge servers, giving them a future-proof IT investment. IT issue: They want to reduce noise. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX has been optimised for quiet operation and fits unobtrusively into an office environment. IT issue: They need to ensure data access, storage capacity and security. PowerEdge VRTX solution: The internal storage of PowerEdge VRTX, similar to direct attached storage, helps deliver better client service with faster performance than a SAN. PowerEdge VRTX can hold up to 48TB of raw data internally, allowing your customers to grow without adding additional external devices. RAID options for PowerEdge VRTX protect data availability and accessibility, while Dell SecureWorks ensures that data cannot be hacked either at rest or in flight. IT issue: They want to ensure security online. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX provides optional firewall protection that integrates all necessary security applications, so your customers can control network traffic, identify threats, filters and more using policies with comprehensive reporting.

PowerEdge VRTX solution scenario: Regional healthcare organisation
Scenario: A growing regional practice needs to meet compliance requirements for protecting patient information; increase collaboration for referrals; implement electronic records; and improve care and electronic access for patients. Problem: Unfulfilled IT goals Overcome hardware sprawl as an inhibitor to growth. Accommodate data explosion due to growing number of patients. Control operational expenses by enhancing productivity of small IT support staff. Ensure delivery of patient care by reducing system downtime due to the amount of time it takes to detect remote system issues. Implement server virtualisation to control capital and operational expenses, and enhance system availability. Solution: PowerEdge VRTX PowerEdge VRTX scalability helps to avoid the cost of relocating to a larger office with more space. Now business growth is supported, rather than inhibited. Huge, secure storage capacity inside the box scales with growing patient population without the cost of an external SAN. A unified systems management solution increases productivity of current IT support staff and avoids cost of hiring new systems administrators. The OpenManage Geographic View feature enables rapid, at-a-glance detection of remote system problems from the central site. Pre-tested and certified hardware and hypervisor configurations permit smooth and confident implementation of server virtualisation. Note: The scenario on this slide is anecdotal. Real-world example from the PowerEdge VRTX early evaluation program will be provided when available. Regional healthcare organisation Scenario A healthcare organisation has seven offices spread across its region. Each of these sites has between two and four servers, running applications ranging from productivity and collaboration applications to personnel records and payroll to a range of applications pertaining to their patient base. The servers at each site, together with their associated external storage boxes, are rack-mounted in cramped IT closets that are running out of space. This not only makes performing routine maintenance a hassle, it doesn’t support business growth. Fast and reliable access to patient records is of supreme importance for patient healthcare and satisfaction. Safe and secure transfer of these records across the web is of equal weight, whether it be for e-prescriptions, telemedicine or insurance billing. Everything must comply with regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Their growing volume of data will soon require additional storage boxes at each site, further straining the already cramped data closets. The organisation has a small IT support staff that must cover the needs of all seven sites. With recent and anticipated growth, the company is seeking tools and solutions that can reduce the IT workload to avoid higher incremental costs of additional staff. The organisation has already implemented remote systems management, but managing server and storage hardware sub-domains separately is very time consuming. The company has implemented virtualised servers at two of its sites and attained cost benefits from doing so. Consequently, they would like to roll out virtualisation across all sites. The challenge is that they don’t know which hardware servers, storage, etc. are compatible and they don’t have time to research. They need a packaged hardware solution, pre-tested by the vendor so they can be confident that it will work. Problem/Solution IT issue: They need to overcome hardware sprawl and increase IT’s ability to support business growth. PowerEdge VRTX solution: Free up rack space by bringing up to four servers, shared storage and networking into a single, tower-sized platform. IT issue: They need fast and reliable access to patient records. PowerEdge VRTX solution: The internal storage of PowerEdge VRTX, similar to direct attached storage, helps deliver better patient care with faster performance than a SAN. RAID options for PowerEdge VRTX protect data availability and accessibility. IT issue: They need safe and secure transfer of patient data and they need to comply with HIPAA. PowerEdge VRTX solution: Dell software options can ensure that data cannot be hacked either at rest or in flight. Optional firewall protection integrates all necessary security applications, so your customers can control network traffic, identify threats, filter and more using policies with comprehensive reporting. IT issue: Data is growing too rapidly. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX can hold up to 48TB of raw data internally, allowing your customers to grow without adding additional external devices. This removes the need for more space in the already full IT closet. IT issue: Enhance the productivity of IT support staff, who are already stretched too thin. PowerEdge VRTX solution: iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller automates updates of server BIOS firmware, wherever servers are distributed on the network, saving significant amounts of time and increasing staff productivity. IT issue: Overcome the limitations and hassle of the current remote management tools that handle servers, storage and networking independently. PowerEdge VRTX solution: CMC for PowerEdge VRTX unifies monitoring of servers, storage and networking into a consolidated, intuitive tool, which saves time and reduces the potential for error and downtime. IT issue: Implement virtualisation confidently. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX configurations are pre-tested and certified to ensure compatibility among all internal hardware resources, operating systems and key hypervisors, including VMware® ESXi and Microsoft® Hyper-V server. This ensures a smooth and confident rollout.

PowerEdge VRTX solution scenario: National retail enterprise
Scenario: A national retailer needs to standardise their IT infrastructure to reduce costs. Specifically, their challenges include enhancing customer service; driving better supply chain reporting and decision support; security; availability; and significantly reducing the resources required to maintain IT policies. They also need help updating, monitoring and protecting data across hundreds of stores. Problem: Unfulfilled IT goals Improve customer service with faster access to customer records. Cost-effectively improve high availability and enhance system uptime in retail outlets. Standardise, on a single platform, across all sites and headquarters’ data centre, to reduce complexity and costs of disparate hardware. Reduce potential for error and system downtime caused by different tools to manage retail outlets versus the central data centre. Enable systems administrators at the central site to more quickly assess remote system health and speed up problem diagnosis. Solution: PowerEdge VRTX Speed up customer service with exceptional compute and storage performance, without the cost of a SAN. Live migration inside the chassis reduces downtime while avoiding the complexity and hassle of cabling, powering and managing a SAN. Standardise and simplify deployment and management with a platform that uses the same server nodes as the data centre. CMC for PowerEdge VRTX in remote outlets has consistent look and feel with CMC in the data centre, letting IT administrators use what they know, confidently. The OpenManage Geographic View feature enables at-a-glance identification of remote system location and health from the central site, boosting uptime at outlets. Note: The scenario on this slide is anecdotal. Real-world example from the PowerEdge VRTX early evaluation program will be provided when available. National retail enterprise Scenario A major retail enterprise has hundreds of stores spread across the country. Several overarching IT applications—including personnel records and payroll, consolidated financial reporting, and supplier accounts payable/receivable—are centralised at the headquarters’ data centre, while others are hosted in the retail outlets and warehouses. The latter include processing point-of-sale transactions, site surveillance and local customer-relationship management. These applications require high levels of security, across multiple dimensions, while protecting against malicious web intrusion and protecting data at rest and in flight. Moving into the future, the company needs to be able to adopt evolving purchase paradigms including mobile technologies. They also need to support a planned expansion of the number of retail outlets. In order to support business growth while reducing cost, the company needs to standardise its IT infrastructure across all sites. The new platform, while standardised, must allow a great degree of configuration flexibility in order to fit the particular needs at each site. It must also offer installation flexibility. At some sites, the platform must be able to fit under a desk in the back office, while at other outlets it will go into a rack in an IT closet. The new platform must also be highly scalable in order to accommodate growth and protect investments. (Dell PowerEdge VRTX would satisfy these demands and provide them with unprecedented versatility, flexibility and scalability.) With systems distributed across hundreds of stores, solutions that reduce IT administrative burden and cost are paramount. The skilled IT staff wastes valuable time performing routine tasks such as server BIOS and firmware updates. Even assessing the basic system health of the remote systems is time-consuming. The enterprise has piloted virtualised servers at a small number of its sites and experienced cost benefits from doing so. Consequently, they would like to roll out virtualisation across all sites. The new standardised platform must support virtualisation. They would like a packaged hardware solution, pre-tested and certified by the vendor so they can roll it out to all sites smoothly and confidently. Problem/Solution IT issue: They need configuration flexibility in a standardised platform. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX offers configuration flexibility and can be tailored to workload and application needs. It supports up to four server nodes providing eight CPUs, 64 cores and up to 1.5TB memory. It also provides internal storage capacity up to 48TB of raw data, flexible I/O options, options for redundancy and high availability, and RAID protection for critical data. IT issue: They want installation flexibility. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX can be installed as a tower under a desk or rack mounted. It supports both the 110 volt AC power commonly found in office environments and the 220 volt AC power found in data centres. IT issue: Improve customer service with fast and reliable access to customer records. PowerEdge VRTX solution: The internal storage of PowerEdge VRTX, similar to direct attached storage, helps to deliver better client service with faster performance than a SAN. RAID options for PowerEdge VRTX protect data availability and accessibility. IT issue: Secure web traffic. PowerEdge VRTX solution: Optional firewall protection integrates all necessary security applications, so your customers can control network traffic, identify threats, filter and more using policies with comprehensive reporting. IT issue: Data is growing too rapidly. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX can hold up to 48TB of raw data internally, allowing growth without adding additional external devices. This removes the need for more space in the back room of retail outlets or in the rack in the data closet. IT issue: Enhance the productivity of IT support staff, who are already stretched too thin. PowerEdge VRTX solution: iDRAC with Lifecycle Controller automates updates of server BIOS firmware wherever servers are distributed on the network, saving significant amounts of time and increasing staff productivity. IT issue: Overcome the limitations and hassle of the current remote management tools that handle remote servers, storage and networking independently. PowerEdge VRTX solution: CMC for PowerEdge VRTX unifies monitoring of servers, storage and networking into a consolidated, intuitive tool. This simplifies management, helps save time and reduces the potential for error and downtime. IT issue: Help IT staff to more quickly assess health of remote systems. PowerEdge VRTX solution: The OpenManage Geographic View feature for PowerEdge VRTX presents a map of the location of remote systems, and it’s color-coded to provide health assessment at a glance. IT issue: Implement virtualisation confidently. PowerEdge VRTX solution: PowerEdge VRTX configurations are pre-tested and certified to ensure compatibility among all internal hardware resources, operating systems and key hypervisors, including VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V server. This ensures a smooth and confident roll-out.
