1 THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING By: Alexa, Mary, Grace and Nicole

2 Key People  Charles Grandison Finney was one of the most important leaders if the Second Great Awakening. After experiencing a Dramatic religion conversion in 1821 Finney left is career as a Lawyer and began Preaching. He challenged some traditional Protestant beliefs telling congregations that each individual was responsible for their own salvation. He also believed that sin could be avoided. He held revivals emotional prayer Meetings. Many people converted to Christianity during these revivals.

3 Key People  Asahel Nettleton was an American theologian (study of religious faith) and pastor from Connecticut who was highly influential during the Second Great Awakening. The number of people converted to Christianity as a result of his ministry is estimated at 30,000. He most notably known for his participation on the New Lebanon Conference in 1827 during which he opposed the teaching of Charles Grandison Finney and Lyman Beecher.

4 Key People  Lyman Beecher was a traditional minister who was angered by Finney preaching and ideas. He along with several other traditional minister wanted to pervert Finney from holding Revivals in Boston.

5 Key People  Barton Warren Stone was an important Preacher during the Second Great Awakening of the early 19 th century. He was the first ordained Presbyterian minster then was expelled from the Church of his beliefs in faith as a sole prerequisite of salvation after Cane Ridge Kentucky revival. He became allied with Alexander Campbell forming the Restoration Movement. His followers were first called “ New Light” and “Stoneites". Later he and Campbell simply tried to bring people together in a simple way most in keeping with the Scriptures.

6 Key People  Peter Cartwright was an early American Preacher. Cartwright was a missionary who helped start the Second Great Awakening. He also personally baptized 12 thousand people. Cartwright was a minister who preached benevolence. He later settled in Illinois and lost against Abraham Lincoln for the United States Congress seat in 1846. As a Methodist circuit riders, Cartwright rode around though Tennessee and Kentucky teaching his Methodist ways.

7 Main Goal  They (Christan people) believed if they had the power to reform themselves and their beliefs they hoped they could have the power to reform how Americans believed which lead to the Second Religious reform or also known as the Second Great Awakening.

8 Methods  They would do revivals for days/weeks. They made their own Utopian Communities trying to a “ Perfect” society for themselves and others to live in.

9 Accomplishments  The Second Great Awakening Accomplished a renewed interest in religion and revival. It also encourage the emergence of a new denomination and religious practice. Also in the Appalachian region of Kentucky, Tennessee the revivals that strengthen the Baptist and a new form of religious camp meetings.
