2 Build Theme Connections Page 4-5 of Living and Growing  Focus Question: How does a plant grow?  I’ve seen tiny corn plants growing in fields. I’ve heard farmers say, “The corn will be knee-high by the Fourth of July.” It usually is. And then it grows taller than people.  What connections can you make?

Page 14, Living and Growing After I read the subhead on page 14, I wonder what lives on light. So far in this book, I haven’t read about anything that lives on light. As I read on, I see the answer is right there in the text. Plants use light to make food, I know food is what living things live on, so plants live on light. Read text on p. 7 (not sidebar) What questions do you have? Repeat with the feature on p. 9.

5 Prepare to Read  Which selection has an index?  Which selection has diagrams and charts?  Which selection gives details about the way many kinds of animals grow?  Which gives details about how one animal grows?  Read pages 12-15 and record text evidence. Read pages 16-24

11 Persuasive Letter Draft May 20, 2013 Dear Mayor Smith: Our town needs a new park. The only park in town is too small. There are a lot of kids in the neighborhood, and the old park is always crowded. There isn’t enough room to play. A new park will make our town healthier. Kids will have a place to run and get exercise. You know how important it is to exercise! A new park will make our community stronger. It will give people a place to meet new friends and talk.
