3 Vocabulary Strategy Thesaurus  A thesaurus is a tool for finding words with similar meanings, or synonyms. If you read an unfamiliar word, a synonym might help you understand that word  Words in a thesaurus are listed alphabetically, as in a dictionary. The entry word is followed by a list of synonyms. Example: Miserable: sad, unhappy, joyless Replace:

4 Comprehension Skill Fact and Opinion Facts are statements that can be proven Opinions are what someone believes Opinion Clues: I believe, I think, in my view How do I know the difference between fact and opinion? I ask myself:  Can this statement be proven?  How could I check this statement?  Do any of these statements tell me what the author thinks or believes? Fact or opinion? Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. Winters there are terrible.

5 Prepare to Read Setting: Where and When a story takes place. The setting- cold, windy Antarctica – affects how Emperor Penguins care for eggs. How might a warmer setting change how they raise chicks? Read together pages 4-32.  Find one fact.  Find one opinion.  What words does the author use to describe how cold the setting is?  How do pictures help you understand the setting?

Why do you think the headline or slogan occurs at the top of the poster? Does this poster have facts, opinions, or both?

9 Write a First Draft Persuasive Language: The event I am going to advertise on my poster is the upcoming bake sale. As I write, I want to use persuasive language to convince readers they should buy something. I could say “The treats are good.” But it would be more persuasive to say “Nothing beats homemade treats.”
