Communications In Television/Movies we are always communicating in one way or other.

Communications Communication is very active in the realm of TV/Movie Production. Because of its importance we are going to explore this week about Communication & how important it is to us in today's society.

Just what is Communication?

What is Communications Succeeding in getting a desired response. The word communication with its prefix "c-o- m" meaning "together" implies an interaction between speaker and listener. It is two people or a group of people speaking to each other.

Eye Contact Part of having Communication is eye contact. Eye Contact is looking out over an audience or person with your eyes not looking down.

Communication Students communicate in many forms and with many different situations. Such as you will communicate one way with your parents, another way with your teachers and another way with your peers

Why is it important to talk or to speak?

Communicating with other people is important to fulfill a social need.

Can you imagine your life without speech? You could not communicate your message very well to others and it would be a total frustration to you.

Would you have problems communicating if you did not know how to speak? (Why)

Yes, communication would be a challenge. We are communicating everyday of our life in almost everything we do.

Why do we talk?

We talk to communicate & fulfill a social need. Humans need to feel wanted or needed without talking it doesn't give a person the satisfaction they need

How do people improve their talking?

Through repetition: Practice, Practice, and Practice. This is how people learn. That is one of the reasons you go to school is to help you learn how to improve your writing & speaking abilities How do people improve their talking?

Again are they communicating? Can babies communicate?

Yes, babies do communicate to others through crying, smiling, moving of arms & legs.

Can babies talk normally?

No-Speech/talking has to be learned. Just like you as a student today your speaking abilities had to be learned. Yet we take it for granted. When you lose your voice you can appreciate how important it is to communicate.

Again it is through repetition or practice speaking around people. As you practice, just like little children learn, you are able to communicate better.

When you talk generally there are people present, for without talking who needs to speak. What is the social function for speaking?

Eye Contact Partner Activity Now find someone that you don't know very well and look at them right in the eyes and have them look at you in the eyes and tell them a favorite movie you liked and why.

What is that called as you looked at the person right next to you?

Eye Contact

Was it hard for you to talk with them because you didn't know them that well?

Now find a partner in the class you might know and share a favorite TV show & why?

What if it had been someone in your family or a close friend would it have even been easier for you to share your favorite TV/movie?

Let’s talk about Peers.

What is the definition of Peers?

What are Peers? Your friends & students with whom you come in contact on a regular basis. There is a lot of communication between Peers during the school year.

Question about your Peers? The following are questions for you to think about as I say them. You are not required to answer them but if you want to make a comment that would be great:

Questions about your Peers? Have you ever thought or asked your shelf how do I sound to my peers? What do they think about me? Does it really matter what my peers think about me? Do I let my peers influence me?

Question about your Peers? The following are questions for you to think about as I say them. You are not required to answer them but if you want to make a comment that would be great:

Peer Influence What influence of communication will my peers have on me now that could influence me for the rest of my life?

Peer Influence Story U.S. Brigadier General Sherian Cadoria once told a story about a childhood incident that made a big impact on her life. She and her brother and sister went shopping, and the cashier gave them back a penny too much change.

Peer Influence Story When they got home and told their mom what had happened, she made them walk three miles back to the store to return the money. She punished all three of them because she believed that one of them should have known it was wrong and spoken up.

Peer Influence Story Brigadier General Cadoria learned a lesson she never forgot. Remember, it takes only one person in a group to say "This is wrong." It takes only one person to make a difference. The next time you are faced with peer pressure, do the right thing. Remember this story and be a leader!

We learn to talk under social influence this happens in our families, at school, at work etc. The environment we live in can influence our communication.

People gain co-operation and control of others through speaking. Such as our current presidential election in 2012 Obama vs Romney. Each of them are trying to communicate and get control of your vote so they can get elected.

Through the social purpose we want listeners to understand, to feel, to believe in our speech.

What would happen if you said something to someone and they didn't respond but just walked away from you? How would you feel? Did communication still happen?

What does ones talking reveal about a person?

It reveals everything about you. Every time you open your mouth and say one sentence, no matter what the words, you reveal something about yourself.

So finally can someone tell me what communication is all about?

Succeeding in getting a desired response. It is an interchange of ideas a "togetherness" a two way sharing process between individuals or groups of people.

End of Part I – First Day of Class

Start of Part II – Second Day of Class

Communicating with other students & people we should work on being positive. William Blake, English poet, painter, and master engraver, has engraved these words into the character of many: As a man is, so he sees. Communication Statement

He's talking about perception - how a person views the world. The word comes from the Latin percipere, which means to grab hold of. So the question of the day is: How do you grab hold of life? Do you hold the negative or the positive? Do you see the glass as half full or half empty? Communication Review

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, great American author and public speaker, tells us there is power in positive thinking. Today, watch those negative thoughts. Instead, be positive and be powerful! Communication of being Positive

So this school year I would like to challenge you to be like what Norman Vincent Peale stated and have a Positive Outlook on High School and particularly this class. Let’s be positive and communicate to others positively as we work together. Communication of Being Positive

Now something to think about: Did the TV/Movies Bingo game that we played were the printed words on the sheet communicating to us? How did it communicate if the sheets of paper did not talk to each of us? Communicating without words

The words gave us an impression in your mind and so silently in your mind it is communicating what the TV program or the Movies was about.

Whether it is watching TV or going to the movies or going to the store, at home, traveling in the car, there is always communication taking place. People that you see or talk to are communicating something to you in your mind.

What would happen if we could not talk?

Can you Communicate without talking?

Non-Verbal Yes you can. Examples: The raised eye brow, the kick under the table, the toothpaste smile, the elbow in the ribs, the hand on the shoulder. It is Physical Movements.

Could we still communicate? If we could not talk but we can still communicate what is that called? Communicating without words

Non-verbal Communication

What is Nonverbal Communication?

What is Nonverbal Communication? Body Language how we sit, move our arm, legs, smile, frown etc

Can TV/Movies communicate without words?

Roll Play: Act out Non-verbal Cues with partner. Upset, Crying, Happy, Hungry, Silent Movies are example of this? Back when movies first came out it was just acting with no words

When did the silent movies play? 1900’s-1930’s My own father back in the 1920s & 1930s told me about going to silent movies they were great. Today if we watched a silent movie it would be boring to us. But up to that time they had never experienced movies. The plan is to have you experience a silent movie

Communicating with others particularly in video sometimes can be easy and some- times hard. Non-verbal communication is an important part of TV Production. What is the word called when you talk to some one? (Communication) How important is it to communicate? (Very important) Communication Review

Are we communicating here in the class? (Obviously yes) Whether it is watching TV, going to the Movies, or filming our own TV movie there is communication always going on as you will find out this year in IB film

Since communication in TV/Movies is really important when did we learn to first communicate as humans? How did communication begin and what role did it play in history & the printed word? History of Communication & Movies

Communication covers many areas and has a long history that we take for granted. Many of us take for granted the use of paper & pen to write with.

As you write a note, letter etc., have you ever thought what it would be like if these items were never invented?

We take email, faxes, cell phones, computers, palm pilots/black berry/IPODS etc. for granted when it has been with in the last 20 to 25 years that these were brought to the knowledge of the public use. Some of these even in the last 10 to 15 years.

When did television begin? When did we have our first movies? Again all of these have to do with communication. It is so important to us to have all these nice things such as email, faxes, cell phones, computers, palm pilots/,I-pods but how did it all start? When did it begin?

When did communication move to television & movies that leads us to our next activity finding out more about how communication & the printed word started and transitioning through today?

Assignment: Read the packet on Communications. Answer questions as you read the packet. Turn in packet when completed. (Stop: FCP 6) History of Communication

Final Cut Pro 6 Lesson #1 Tutorial (After completion Final Cut Pro 6 continue PowerPoint on Communications. FCP 6 Lesson #1 Part #1

Now that we have studied about communication and the history of communication there is a movie on what impact can happen to children & adults when communication breaks down and when communication works properly in a family. Communication in the family

Family Communication Communication with peers or families have varying degrees of acceptance as you interact with each other.

Family Communication To see this demonstrated We will be watching the movie Cheaper by the Dozen. This will illustrate how communication can affect each family member.

Family Communication Show DVD: Graphic Organizer and Communication Movie Review Worksheet Film:Cheaper by the Dozen.

Family Communication After watching the movie have students take their graphic organizer & movie review worksheet on communication and how this could apply to each of us as we work this year in TV Production. Due first of the class on Tues., Aug. 5th

End of Part II – Second Day of Class

You are to find students that have seen one or two of these movies. As you find someone that has done this have him or her sign their name in the box. You can only sign two boxes on one person's sheet. Every student in the class must sign on a sheet. TV/Movie Bingo Game-Get Acquainted

The goal is to have everyone in the class have their sheets signed. After all the squares are filled in you can sit down. I will call on someone who will read a name from their paper and that person will share what they liked or disliked about the movie or television show. (Stop) TV/Movie Bingo Game-Get Acquainted

Was it hard to go up to some of the class members you didn't know and ask a question? What do we learn from this game about communication. Is it always easy to communicate? (Why) (Turn in TV/Bingo Game with your name at the top.) TV/Movie Bingo Game-Get Acquainted
