4 Lets discover the world of plants. First things first: seeds The seed coat softens. A tiny root sticks out and grows away from the sun. It is pulled down by gravity. The root takes in water from the soil and nutrients from an embryo inside. The seed begins to sprout and a stem grows. It is now called a seedling. Once leaves form the seedling begins to make its own food. Now it is called a plant.
