6 Journal #4 (or #5?) ◦Do you seek out experiences that cause you to be afraid? Explain a specific time that you sought an experience because of the fear involved. Why did you do it?

7 Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) Born in Boston Father left and mother died Poe was expelled by West Point Lived with aunt then in Virginia where he began to write short stories. He married his cousin, but she died at the age of 24. Two years later Poe was found delirious and died shortly thereafter.

Examples Suspenseful Moment: Dangerous Action The narrator's violent moods creates trouble for everyone, including himself. Pacing It takes a while to discover exactly what happened to that cat the narrator killed. Foreshadowing We know the narrator has done something terrible. The story begins with him awaiting execution in a jail cell.

12 Write a paragraph or essay analyzing suspense. ◦The following questions may help: ◦How does Poe use foreshadowing to create suspense? ◦How does the dangerous actions of the narrator establish an ominous mood? ◦How does knowing the narrator is awaiting execution as the story begins make it more or less suspenseful? ◦Another option is to write a Poe-like short narrative.
