2 Story 1: Mrs Shepherd woke up at 3 one morning because she heard something. She woke Mr Shepherd up and said to him, “Hey honey, I think the dog just barked and I think I just heard footsteps downstairs. __________. I’m going downstairs to check.” A. Somebody could have been in our apartment. B. Somebody might have been in our apartment.

3 Story 2: Mr and Mrs Shepherd arrived home from a 2-week vacation. When Mrs Shepherd got into the bedroom, she was shocked. “Look at this! My drawers are all open and my jewelry is scattered all over the floor. I am sure that they weren’t like this when we left. __________. I’m going to call the police.” C. Somebody must have been in our apartment. D. Somebody has been in our apartment.

4 Story 3: Mrs Shepherd came back from a 2-week vacation with her husband and found that her house had been broken in. The police underwent a series of investigations but still could not catch the thief. In the afternoon, Mrs Shepherd talked to her colleagues about the burglary, “It was the most horrible thing that had ever happened to me. Although we didn’t have anything stolen, we know that _____________. The police suggested that we should change all the locks on the doors in our apartment.” D. Somebody has been in our apartment.

7 Situation You are an investigator from the police force responsible for George Stevens’s murder. The suspects in this case are George’s secret girlfriends: Elaine, Tina, Pansy and Katherine. As there is no other people’s fingerprint or blood, except George’s, found at the scene. You have to work with your team members on the alibis provided by these four girls.

10 Things found in the living room A size 36 sandal next to the door A pink butterfly earring on the tea-table Two dishes of seafood chow mein on the table untouched two pairs of chopsticks placed in the left-hand- side of a dish of chow mein and the right-hand- side of another dish of chow mein respectively (George is right-handed)

11 Assumption of the investigators: What were left at the crime scene belong to the murderer!!!

12 Role of group members Each group member is responsible for explaining one alibi provided by a girlfriend of George's. You cannot show each other your information directly. You can only explain to them orally.

13 Things you have to do 1.Describe the information you have to your groupmates. 2.Compare your own information with other groupmates’ information. 3.Make deductions about which girlfriend is suspicious for each event, using modal verb + have + past participle 4.Choose an appropriate modal verb to determine the degree of possibility. 5.Fill in the group worksheet.

Extremely suspicious => √√√ Very suspicious => √√ Quite suspicious => √ Not suspicious=> blank After going through the 6 events with your groupmates, you should analyze the findings and determine who is the prime suspect.

17 What is your phone number? Pansy: 6099 4455 Tina said her phone number is 6099 4455 The first 4 digits don’t match with the ones that George dialed before he died. Therefore, she couldn’t have been the one that George was trying to reach. not suspicious => blank

18 What is your phone number? Katherine: 6223 3348 Katherine said her phone number is 6223 3348. The first 4 digits match with the ones that George dialed before he died. Therefore, she might have been the one that George was trying to reach. Relatively suspicious => √√
