2 Learning Objectives To learn how to dress properly for work and social events. To learn some useful phrases and expressions concerned about fashion. To discuss different fashions between women and men, teenagers and adults, the young and the old.

3 I. Warming up questions Do you spend much money on fashion? Do you find it important to follow the latest fashion? Why or why not? Why do many young people today go after famous name brands in everything they buy?

4 Background information Fashion, in most cases, refers to the styles of clothing, hairstyles or behavior etc. that are popular at a particular time. Fashion changes quickly. For example, mini-skirts were all the fashion in the 1960s but they were out of fashion in the 1980s.

5 Many people, especially women and the young, like to follow the fashion, which is usually set by famous film stars, pop singers, models. People’s attitude towards fashion differs from one to another. Some people think changing fashion is nothing but a waste of time and money. Others think it can make the world more colorful and beautiful. Well- designed clothes can make one feel good and can reflect one’s personality.

If something, especially a style of music, decoration, art etc, is in vogue, it is fashionable at the moment with a particular group of people

8 The video game ‘Streetfighter 2’ is very fashionable at the moment. Tracksuits, cycling shorts and running shoes are very much in fashion now for everyday wear. Surprisingly, flared trousers are in fashion again. Quaint country styles and cottage furniture have in fashion for a long time. Do you remember when New Wave music was in vogue?

9 Surfing is all the rage on beaches throughout the world. Buying a cabin in the mountains may be all the rage at the moment, but is it really a sound investment? Have you tried Japanese food? It’s the latest thing. Short haircuts for men went out for a time, and then they came back into fashion.

10 For over a decade now, Princess Diana has been setting the fashion all over the world. Michael Jackson set the fashion of wearing only one glove. To save the planet we must set the trend of caring for the environment. The ‘Green’ approach to living is a trend that should be encouraged. People’s fondness for wearing black and other dark colors was a vogue I never really like.
