INSTRUCTIONS  This Power Point leads you through a web quest that will provide you information about The Pearl which will help you appreciate the book.  Start a Google document to be shared among every person at your table.  This document will be uploaded into Dropbox on Haiku when you are finished.  DO NOT WORK INDIVIDUALLY ON THIS. Do not assign parts. This is a collaboration. Start by pulling up the first slide. Everyone searches for answers. Then, discuss various at your table and have one person write the response on the Google document. Everyone should be searching at the same time for the same information and then sharing out and creating the written piece through collaboration.  Failure to collaborate will result in two full grade deductions.

3. ANALYZE THE TITLE  Make predictions. What do you think The Pearl will be about based on its title and your vocabulary words? Hints – What does a pearl signify in society?

4. PARABLE  What is a parable?  Find an example of a parable.  Re-tell it in your own words.  Write your own short parable.

5. JOHN STEINBECK  Find ten facts about the author of The Pearl, John Steinbeck.

6. JOHN STEINBECK BIOGRAPHY  Use the ten facts about John Steinbeck that you just found.  Write a biological paragraph about Steinbeck using the ten facts.

7. THE PEARL  Where is the setting of The Pearl?  In what year did Steinbeck write The Pearl?

8. LA PAZ, MEXICO  Search for a map that shows LaPaz, Mexico.  Describe it in a paragraph.

9. 1945  What major events were happening in the world in 1945?  Who was president of the United States in 1945?  What was the attitude of Americans in 1945?  What was minimum wage in 1945?  How much did a house cost in 1945?  How many Americans had televisions in 1945?  How many Americans had indoor plumbing in 1945?  How would the events that occurred in 1945 influence Steinbeck?

10. LITERATURE  What writers were popular in 1945?  What books were popular?

11. STYLE  Find images of clothing in 1945. Upload two images and write about the difference between clothing in 1945 vs. now.

12. ART  Who were popular artists in 1945?  Choose one.  What kind of art did he/she create?  What was his/her philosophy?

13. MUSIC  What kind of music was popular in 1945?  Find two short music Youtube videos from the time period.  Watch them.  Write a paragraph that states the difference between the music then vs. now.

14. CONCLUSION  Given the information that you just learned, make a prediction about the book The Pearl, and write a statement that connects what you’ve learned in your research to your prediction.  In essence you are answering the question: How do the events and circumstances of a certain year influence a writer’s work?
