How do I find stuff in the Library? How do I find stuff in the Library?  Databases The Library subscribes to a variety of databases thru consortia that provide information on books, dissertations, articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers, and other materials. Full text is available from many of our databases. The databases are now easily accessible off campus by clicking on the database name and typing in the required information. For further details on how to explore and research using the databases go to the Information Literacy section of the “Library Home Page.” Alternately, you may call the Library Supervisor, Digna P. Verlinden at (08) 96226740 for assistance. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC) to arrange books and other library materials on the shelves so they may be easily retrieved. It is used in many libraries and places items with a similar subject together on the shelve. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? How does the Dewey Decimal system work? DDC is an hierarchical number system that organizes all human knowledge into ten main categories. These are: 000Generalities (includes computing) 100Philosophy 200Religion 300Social Sciences 400Languages 500Natural sciences and mathematics 600Technology (applied science) 700The arts 800Literature 900 Geography and history ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? How does the Dewey Decimal system work? Each main category is then divided into ten sub-categories. For example: 500Natural sciences and mathematics 510Mathematics 520Astronomy 530Physics 540Chemistry 550Earth Sciences 560Paleontology 570Life sciences 580Plants (Botany) 590 Animals (Zoology) ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? How does the Dewey Decimal system work? Each sub-category then also divided into ten specific topics. For example: 530Physics 531Solid mechanics 532Fluid mechanics 533Pneumatics 534Sound 535Light 536Heat 537Electricity and electronics 538Magnetism 539 Modern physics ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? How does the Dewey Decimal system work? Each of these topics may be further divided into more specific subject areas. A decimal point is used after the first three digits to separate the specific subjects – it also makes the numbers easier to read. You will see that as the subject becomes more specific, so does the numbering. For example: Sound and related vibrations 534.1Generation of sound 534.2Transmission of sound 534.22 Transmission in solids 534.23Transmission in liquids ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? What classification scheme is used in the CYOC library? Finding items on the shelves The shelfmark will always have at least three numbers, followed by some letters. It is usually displayed on the spine of the item, but is sometimes placed on the front cover. Here are some examples: 361.382.576599.647.823. 363JON93594421914 HIGCOCPHILONBAI/B The DDC system places items about the same subject at the same number. This means that once you have identified the DDC number for the subject you are interested in, you can browse the shelves at that number. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation

What classification scheme is used at CYOC library? What classification scheme is used at CYOC library? Finding items on the shelves On each shelf the items are arranged in a numerical sequence from left to right by their DDC number. Where several items have an identical DDC number, the letters are used to further arrange them. For Example: 361.361.361.363.363.363. 3323235377377 HIGBORSTOCIVPREPRO ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _ Learning Resource Centre Orientation
