3 3 AIM Provide a BRIEF and high level overview of the scope of work in the area of Radar & EW in the military environment Provide a brief insight into some future developments and trends in the military environment Engender some enthusiasm from the broader stakeholder environment to support (military) radar & EW research & development Encourage greater awareness of the local capability that exists and the benefits it can hold for the country

7 7 South African Radar Interest Group (SARIG) Established 2008 Comprises all role players as listed Under the auspices of AMD AIM: “The South African Radar Interest Group is responsible for dealing with issues relating to the interests and advancement of Radar and radar-related development in South Africa. This includes, but is not limited to, tertiary education, continuous education and industrial co- operation.”

8 8 South African Radar Interest Group (SARIG) RM100’s has spent primarily by the DoD to build up a world class local capability Two locally developed radars are in operation with the SANDF Thutlhwa (SA Army) Optronics Radar Tracker (SAN) DoD continues to retain this capability through EDERI and other technology funding Critical to retain this capability for future acquisitions

10 10 SARIG TECHNOLOGY FOCUS SARIG HAS DECIDED to: Support the AWARENET Concept as developed by F. Anderson of DPSS as a focus area of radar technology and co-operation Actively participate in the establishment of post graduate education at universities Ensure that the limited resources in the country are utilised optimally in the greater national interests. Tackle national problems related to Radar systems and technology

12 12 FUTURE POSSIBILITIES OF CO- OPERATION - RADAR All Weather Surface to Air Missile (AWSAM) for use by the SA Army and SA Navy Maritime Patrol Aircraft Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for UAVs Co-operation with Industry and EDERIs on radar technology advancement (e.g. fusion) Participation in AWARENET

13 FUTURE POSSIBILITIES OF CO- OPERATION - EW New Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) for airborne platforms EW systems for the SA Army and Defence Intelligence - COMINT ESM packages for UAVs Airborne ELINT Self protection systems for high value assets Development of novel intercept techniques and advanced ECM hardware (e.g. Enigma) Participation in AWARENET

14 14 FUTURE CHALLENGES Attracting more people into our environment – rejuvenation Stimulation of interest in R&D and post-graduate research in Radar & EW Retention of skills in an environment which provides extremely high job satisfaction but cannot compete with the salaries of commercial companies Rationalisation of R&D in order to optimise the most effective national outputs/goals for a very limited resource pool Commitment by the State to support the endeavours of the radar and EW industry

15 15 Current attrition rate will result in there not being enough technical skills available to support the current military platforms, let alone the future acquisitions. Local capability could die Additional cost burdens if we have to acquire all our future military hardware from overseas suppliers FUTURE CHALLENGES (cont)

16 16 SUMMARY DoD is very active in ALL aspects of radar and EW – both acquisition and technology development ALL sensors play a critical role in all platforms required for all arms of service as well as other State departments RSA/DoD has built up an impressive indigenous capability over many years DoD will support these capabilities going into the future depending on budgets and strategic requirements – assistance from other state departments will help

17 17 SUMMARY (cont) We have a world class radar and EW capability in the country as evident in operational systems in service ALL Stakeholders have a pivotal role to play in the radar and EW capability going into the future, if it is maintained SARIG is a vehicle in which greater industrial and inter-departmental co-operation can happen The radar and EW industry/capability in the country is prepared to make a significant contribution to the advancement of security in the country with the appropriate levels of support and investment
