2 Which Do You Prefer? Yesterday, I went to the mall. It was very busy. The lines to checkout were very long. The mall I went to yesterday was so busy, I couldn’t even move! The lines to checkout were like snakes, trailing all the way out the doors.

3 Alliteration Repetition of sounds She sells seashells by the seashore Katherine can’t kick the cake. Brownies are the best, bar none!

4 Allusion Reference to a work within another work. AJ was reading Harry Potter. Sasha asked, “Did you watch Paranormal Activity last night?

5 Onomatopoeia Sound words BOOM POW BAM OINK MOO

6 Personification giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas). The bird whistled a sad tune. The book sat on the table. The candle revealed the way through the tunnel.

7 Metaphor A comparison made between two unlike items, often recognized by understanding one thing in terms of another. That is an eye-catching outfit. You are the sunshine in my life. My boss is an evil dictator.

8 Simile A comparison using “like” or “as.” He was as tough as a lion. Sally swims like a dolphin. Bob flopped like a fish on a line.

9 Hyperbole An extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally.  My sister wore so much makeup, she could pass for a clown at the circus.  I had to wait an eternity at the DMV.  The knife was so sharp, it could cut air.

10 Symbolism One thing stands for something else.

15 Assignment Create your own paragraph using all four types of figurative language we have learned today. It can be any length, as long as you include all four types.
