Circulatory System
2
Go with the Flow! The Circulatory System moves fluids around the body and protects it from disease. Video
3
Heart = 4 chambered muscular pump Blood = clear fluid (plasma) that carries blood cells, platelets, nutrients, and gases ( O 2 and CO 2) through the body – Watch “What color is blood?”Watch Blood vessels = arteries, veins, capillaries carry blood through body The cardiovascular system is a closed- loop system. Cardiovascular system
4
Closed circulatory system Vertebrates, and a few invertebrates blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness blood is pumped by a heart through vessels, and does not normally fill body cavities. Open circulatory system mollusks and arthropods pump blood into a hemocoel with the blood diffusing back to the circulatory system between cells Blood is pumped by a heart into the body cavities, where tissues are surrounded by the blood. Closed and Open Circulatory System
5
O2O2 O2O2 Septum = muscular wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart. Right side of the heart pumps oxygen- poor blood to the lungs. Left side of the heart pumps oxygen- rich blood to the body. The Heart of the Matter
6
2 upper chambers of the heart Right atrium Left atrium Chambers in Heart RALA RV 2 lower chambers Right Ventricle Left Ventricle LV
8
Blood Vessel Artery moves blood AWAY from the heart under high pressure - thick walls
9
Blood Vessel Vein moves blood TOWARDS the heart 1 –way valves keep blood from flowing backwards
10
Blood Vessel Capillaries SMALLEST blood vessels… connect arteries and veins Allows exchanges between body cells and blood!
11
Review the three types of blood vessels… An artery … carries blood … A capillary … smallest blood vessel that … A vein … carries blood …
12
Blood ● pH: 7.35-7.45 ● Temperature: 100.4◦F (slightly higher than body temperature) ● 8% of our total body weight (~5L)
13
Functions of Blood 1.Distribution of O2, nutrients & hormones 2. Regulation of body temp. by absorbing & distributing heat throughout the body – maintaining a normal pH 3. Protection by preventing blood loss by forming clots at a damaged blood vessel site. This prevents infection (WBC, Antibodies, etc. defend against bacteria & viruses)
14
Blood Flow through the Heart :
15
Pathway of Blood to & from the Heart: 1.FROM the BODY 2.Deoxygenated blood enters the Superior & Inferior Vena Cava 3.Right Atrium 4.Tricuspid Valve 5.Right Ventricle 6.Pulmonary Artery 7.TO THE LUNGS 8.Pulmonary Veins 9.Left Atrium 10.Bicuspid Valve 11.Left Ventricle 12.Aorta 13.TO THE BODY
