EMERGENCY MOTIONS UPDATE Motion 1: THE FINANCIAL CRISIS In light of the ongoing financial / economic / social crisis and the constant failure to address its gender impact the European Women’s Lobby calls on the European Commission and relevant EU authorities to take urgent measures in order to handle the crisis with a gender sensitive approach. The austerity measures and the privatisation of public services must not result in shifting the benefits to men and the risks to women. All recovery plans must integrate a strong gender equality priority and involve women at the decision making level in financial, economic, social and other policies related to the post crisis era.

EMERGENCY MOTIONS UPDATE Motion 1: THE FINANCIAL CRISIS Integration of the issue in all policy work on social policy violence against women, EU policies etc. Continuous dissemination of the EWL-Oxfam study on the impact of the crisis on women (February 2010) Contacts with decision-makers on this issue Work on the EU budget & funding for women’s rights

EMERGENCY MOTIONS UPDATE Motion 2: WITNESSING FOR PINAR SELEK TO SEEK JUSTICE Pınar Selek, a feminist activist member of the EWL coordination for Turkey has for the past 12 years been unjustly blamed for the explosion in the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. This accusation was proven to be wrong by six expert reports and declared as a gas leak. Having exhausted her domestic remedies, she will seek an appeal on 15th of June to European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on the basis of torture and unfair trial. We call upon the members of the EWL to support her in her right to seek justice in the independent court, the ECHR, and to support her in this process.

EMERGENCY MOTIONS UPDATE Motion 2: WITNESSING FOR PINAR SELEK TO SEEK JUSTICE Pinar Selek has filed her case before the ECHR and has recently received her file number Case still ongoing in Turkey: the acquittal pronounced on 09.02.2011 was appealed against by the prosecutor’s office ECHR process: application on the list to be considered for assessment at the ECHR

EMERGENCY MOTIONS UPDATE Motion 3: EWL STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF THE 2010 SOUTH AFRICA WORLD CUP The General Assembly calls on the EWL to issue an open letter, that could be used as a press release, to FIFA and other actors, including the world cup associations (at national and international levels), to call on them to take into consideration women’s rights in South Africa and implement comprehensive gender equality policies, including combating the exploitation of women in prostitution. We are also calling the EWL to look for future opportunities to lobby on respect for women in the context of national and ınternatıonal sport events.

EMERGENCY MOTIONS UPDATE Motion 4: EUROPEAN PROTECTION ORDER In light of the failure of the EU Protection order for victims to achieve a qualified majority under the Spanish Presidency on 3-4 June, the EWL GA invites the next Council Presidency to take up this topic as a priority and take all the necessary measures to foster a positive voting on the draft directive on the European Protection Order. The GA encourages all Member States to work towards a constructive solution in this matter. The problems posed by the limitation of national protection orders have to be solved urgently.
