4 WOMEN IN POLITICS – Bulgaria 4 Women in the Bulgarian Presidency There was no woman president up to know (directly elected from citizens) Two women vice-presidents (directly elected together with the President ) – during 1992 – 1993 and NOW Ms Margarita Popova – Vice-President of the Republic of Bulgaria since January, 2012

7 WOMEN IN POLITICS – Bulgaria 7 Women in Local Authorities Total number of Bulgarian Municipalities – 264  Women mayors of Municipalities (directly elected by citizens) – 29 (11%)  A woman is the Mayor of Sofia for the first time (since November, 2009): Ms Yordanka Fandykova  Women chairpersons of City Councils (elected from the members of the city councils) – 73 (28%)

12 WOMEN IN POLITICS – Bulgaria 12 Forbes Bulgaria Rating The most powerful woman in Bulgaria – Ms Tsvetelina Borislavova, Chair of the Supervisory Board of the Bulgarian American Credit Bank In the Top 10 of Forbes Rating is also Ms Svetla Kostadinova, Executive Director of the Institute for Market Economics (NGO)

15 WOMEN IN POLITICS – Bulgaria 15 The Contribution of Balkan Assist Association Implemented project under Phare ACCESS Programme: Participation of Women and Different Ethnical Groups in the decision-making process at local level, 2005 – 2007 Project partner to various projects on gender equality implemented by Bulgarian NGOs Participation in ALDA’s project regarding gender balance and equal opportunities, implemented in 2011 – 2012 in partnership between Bulgarian, Italian, Spanish and French NGOs Participation in conferences and other events regarding gender equality, organized by the European Parliament's office in Bulgaria
