Old and New Testament Sexual Ethics How the Old and New Testament influenced Christians today and attitudes towards sex, relationships, Masturbation, Celibacy and homosexuality.

Starter One Page represents the Old Testament and the other the New Testament. Put a heading on each piece of paper and why these pictures are there; Who are they or what is the picture of What belief under Christianity do they represent.

Who are these people? What could there connection/ relationship be?

Old Testament Contents: Love Stories –Ruth and Boaz Detailed accounts of incest – daughters of Lot in Genesis 19 who had a relationship with her father. Tales of seduction and sexual revenge.

Genesis 1 and 2 Understanding that sex is created by God and meant for procreation. Sex is not seen as wrong but good, yet the contradictions appear as sex should not be practised in sinful ways so is wrong in circumstances. What circumstances do you think? Sinful ways: having sex with non- Israelites was forbidden as it would be straying away from God. Adultery was forbidden as it was seen as theft and you could be stoned because of it. So what do you think the view of women was?

Women Women were not equal but they had to be apart of household of a man. Women had to be virgins when they got married. Why do you think this is?

New Testament Jesus- He said very little about sex and he gave very few rules and instructions but he called his followers to ‘live as part of the Kingdom of God and reflect through their lives Gods love for all people and live to justly with each other.’ What do you think this means?

This means the question of sex and relationships was left wide open, even his teachings bout marriage and divorce were not too concise to get a definite answer. However he quoted: ‘whoever divorces his wife and (kai) marries another commits adultery against her’ (porneia). Whats your interpretation?

Meanings of words Kai- (meaning) in order to, so does not just mean ‘and’,so depending on interpretation – so meaning changes. Poenria- Meaning; not a virgin when married in which case you can divorce immediately after marriage. Could mean adultery so therefore a man could divorce his wife, however a woman would not have the same rites. Could mean fornication which means chasing after another gods- so a man could divorce due to her religious beliefs or the lack of.

Conclusions Jesus wants to challenge the view of women being seen as the property of men. They should have equal rites in a relationship. However it is clear that divorce is not is his idea of relationship ethics.

Paul His writing was influenced by his expectation of the imminent return of Christ and the end of the world. So he thought there was no need to give advice in detail as all human relationships were soon to come to an end. He was also influenced by Greek thinking and attempted to move Christians away from the body and concentrate on the soul.

Corinthians 6:12-20 Summary: not to let bodily emotions control people and sexual activity to be kept within marriage as the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and should be respected. So what do you think his view on marriage was?

Quotes under St Paul What do the Bible quotes suggest?

St Paul- Make up your mind? Sometimes women were equal other times his view went back to the view of old testament, that women are property of men. Sometimes marriage was for the weak minded, other times he compared it to the bond between Christ and the Church. However Christ is the head of the Church which means Paul must think men are head of the household.

Conclusion: Paul limited his views because of the time he lived in, he was waiting for the return of Jesus back to earth, who being the Son of God would obviously create all the rules and laws ….. However he has never to this day returned.

Old VS New testament- Main task: Pages 255-258 Views/Similarities and differences between sex, marriage and divorce. Which do you agree with more, Old or New Testament? Apply these views to celibacy, masturbation, homosexuality. Do you think these views influenced Christians today? Think about what you know already about Roman Catholics, Church of England and other views. Which was more influential? Evidence
