OVERWATER FLIGHT Ditching And Water Survival A GHAFI & FAA “Wings” Seminar

David C. “Hoss” Robertson  FAA Aviation Safety Counselor  B.S. Aeronautical Science - Embry- Riddle Aeronautical University  CFI since 1986  Search & Rescue/Recovery Pilot since 1987  Air Station Houston since 1997

“FLIGHT PLAN” ( Threat of Ditching ( Before You Go ( Survival Equipment ( Offshore Operations ( Ditching Procedures ( Splashdown & Egress ( Survival in The Water ( Rescue ( Helicopter Pick-Up

Threat of Ditching n Weather n Fuel Exhaustion n Physical Impairment n Mechanical Failure

Weather n Get Through Preflight Briefing n Get Inflight Updates n Watch Changing Weather Patterns

Fuel Exhaustion  Fill Tanks to Weight Limit  Monitor Fuel Usage  Do NOT Fly Into Fuel Reserve –FAR 91.151 n VFR/Day = intended landing plus 30 minutes n VFR/Night = “ “ “ 45 minutes –FAR 91.167 For IFR Requirements

Physical Impairment ¤ Do NOT Fly Unless Healthy –AIM “IM-SAFE” Checklist ¤ Abort Flight If Feeling Ill ¤ Train passengers to “Pinch Hit”

AIM “IM-SAFE” Checklist 4 Illness 4 Medication 4 Stress 4 Alcohol 4 Fatigue 4 Emotion

Mechanical Failure n Fly a Well Maintained Aircraft n Conduct a Thorough Pre-flight Inspection & Use a Checklist n Abort Flight at The FIRST Sign of Trouble

Before You Go n Dress For The Flight n Inspect Survival Equipment n Passenger Briefing n File a Flight Plan!!

Dress For The Flight n Based On Weather Enroute n Keep Critical Items On Your Person n Preferred Clothing –Nomex –Wool –Cotton n Do NOT Wear Polyester

Inspect Survival Equipment 4 Inventory Items - Location of Equipment 4 Check Battery Life - Radios/Lights 4 Expiration Dates on Flares 4 Condition of Flotation Gear - PFDs/Rafts

Survival Equipment n PFDs, 1 Per Seat n Dye Marker n Signal Mirror n Whistle n Knife n “Space” Blanket n Flares n Strobe Light n Smoke Device n EPIRB/ELT n 2-Way Radio n Raft

Passenger Briefing  Operation Of Aircraft Exits & Seat Belts  Location of Survival Equipment  Use of Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)  Emergency Alerting Signals  Required Actions In Case of Ditching  Emergency Egress Procedures  After Egress Plan

Flight Planning + File an FAA Flight Plan + File a “Family” Flight Plan –Notify Two Family Members/Friends –Instruct Them On Overdue Procedures –Brief Them On Special Equipment/Situations + Update “Both” Flight Plans As Necessary + Close “Both” Flight Plans

Offshore Operations n “Flight Beyond Gliding Distance From Shore” n 1,000 ft to Surface = 1 Minute Average n Single Engine = Within 25 Miles Of Shore n Multi-Engine = Up To 50 Miles Of Shore n PFDs For All & Raft With Room For All n At Least 1 Portable EPIRB/ELT or Radio

Ditching Procedures n Have a Ditching Plan n Recognize The Emergency EARLY n Use a Ditching Checklist n PRACTICE Ditching Procedures – On the ground (1 minute drill) – At altitude (1,000 foot drill)

Ditching Checklist 4 Best Angle Of Glide 4 Turn INTO Wind 4 Attempt Restart 4 Transponder 7700 4 Transmit MAYDAY 4 ELT On 4 Ignition & Master OFF 4 Seat Belts TIGHT 4 Doors UNLOCKED & AJAR 4 Secure Loose Items -or- 4 Jettison Loose Items 4 Touchdown NOSE HIGH & Minimum Airspeed

Touchdown on Crest/Backside Of Swells ( Wind < 15 KTS –Touchdown Parallel With Swells ( Wind > 15, 15, < 30 KTS –Touchdown 1/2 Way Between Swells & Wind ( Wind > 30 KTS –Touchdown Into The Wind

Splashdown And Egress n Shock –Physiological –Psychological n Injuries –Types –Prevention n Egress –Seven Step Method

7 Steps to Underwater Egress n 1. Establish good reference point n 2. Remove everything, except seat belt n 3. Open Exits, doors, windows n 4. Reestablish reference point n 5. Take deep breaths often as possible n 6. Stop everything, count 5-8 seconds n 7. Hand-over-hand egress method!

Survival In The Water Flotation Flotation  First Aid  Hypothermia  Predator Fish W Signaling –EPIRB/ELT –Mirror –Strobe –Flares –Dye Marker

Hypothermia  Body Core Temperature  Body Heat Loss Heat Loss Prevention Heat Loss Prevention –“HELP” Method n Heat Escape Lessening Posture –Huddle Method

Survival Swimming n Familiarity With Water Environment n Treading Water n Drownproofing

Familiarity With Water n Learn to Swim n Learn to Relax In The Water n PRACTICE

Treading Water n Lean Slightly Forward, Keep Most of The Body Immersed n Use a Modified “Frog” Kick n Scull With Hands Planed

Drownproofing n Conserves Energy & Helps Stay Afloat n Place Most of The Body Underwater n Bend Slightly At Waist, Chin on Chest, Arms on Surface n Lift Head to Exhale, Inhale, And Return To Rest Position n AVOID in Hypothermia Conditions

Rescue 4 Stay Calm, DON’T Panic 4 Get In Raft, Stay TOGETHER 4 Average Military Rescue Time = 4 Hours 4 Once In Raft Fire ONE Flare, Save Others 4 Most Victims Die JUST as Rescuers Arrive - DON’T GIVE UP!!

Helicopter Pick-Up  Once Visually Sighted, Use Flare, Smoke Or Mirror Ø Prepare For Strong Rotor Downdrafts 4 Do EXACTLY What The Rescue- Swimmer Says!  Do NOT Try To “Assist” The Rescue- Swimmer

Thank You Very Much “A safe flight, is no accident!” www.uscg.mil/d8/airstahouston/auxiliary
