2 Science Essential Standards
First Quarter Properties & Position of Objects Second Quarter Characteristics of Animals Third Weather Fourth Characteristics & Movement of Animals

3 Unpacking the Science Essential Standards
Life Science Structures & Functions of Living Organisms K.L.1 Compare characteristics of animals that make them alike and different from other animals and nonliving things.

4 Science Essential Standards
K.L.1 Compare characteristics of animals that make them alike and different from other animals and nonliving things. K.L.1.1 Compare different types of the same animal to determine individual differences within a particular type of animal. K.L.1.2 Compare characteristics of living and nonliving things in terms of their structure, growth, changes, movement, and basic needs.

5 Unpacking the Science Essential Standards
Physical Science Forces and Motion K.P.1 Understand the positions and motions of objects and organisms observed in the environment.

6 Science Essential Standards
K.P.1 Understand the positions and motions of objects and organisms observed in the environment. K.P.1.2 Give examples of different ways objects and organisms move: Straight Zigzag Round and round Back and forth Fast and slow

7 Life Science 1st Needs of living things for energy and growth
Human and environmental factors that enable plants and animals to survive 2nd Animal life cycles Similarities and differences of organisms to their parents 3rd Human body (systems of support) Survival of plants 4th Animal adaptations and survival Nutrition (food, vitamins, minerals, and exercise) 5th Structures and systems of organisms Interdependence of plants and animals with their ecosystems

8 Living vs. Nonliving Things
Sort the cards into two groups Cardsorts: (Graphic Organizers) Living Nonliving

9 Living Things Grow and develop Need air, food, and water Move
Made up of one or more cells Carry out basic life processes Acquire or make food Respire (breathe) Reproduce React to stimuli Eliminate waste

10 What misconceptions do students have about living and nonliving things?
Video:

11 Misconceptions Cartoons and book characters are living things.
Computers are living things. Use movement as the only characteristic to explain living things. Confuse concept of real or active as alive.

12 Misconceptions Confusion with dead and nonliving.
Children have different views of animal life and plant life. Items that were once parts of living things are living things. Items made from living things are thought to be alive.

13 Uncovering Student Ideas in Science
Assessment Probes Respiration Is It an Animal? Is it Living? No Animals Allowed

14 Is it Living? Put X next to living things _____Tree _____Rock
_____Fire _____Boy _____Wind _____Rabbit _____Cloud _____Feather _____Grass _____Mushroom _____Potato _____Leaf _____Butterfly _____Pupae _____Bear Is it Living? Explain your thinking. What “rule” or reasoning did you use to decide if something could be considered living?

20 Defining Characteristics of Living Things
Have students list characteristics of living things. Select living things as examples and check off whether the characteristic matches the living thing. Finalize a list of characteristics of living things.

21 Compare and contrast items to determine if they are living or nonliving

23 Compare & Contrast Activity 1:
Place a live object (worm, insect, plant) in a container and a replica of the object in a similar container Have students observe the objects over time and record observations in journal Activity 2: Have students observe and compare a real potted plant and an artificial plant using a Venn Diagram

24 Roll and Name Label one cube with the words water, land, and air
Label another cube with the words living and nonliving Have students roll the cubes and name a plant, animal, or object that fits the descriptive words land living air water living nonliving

25 Real or Pretend? Compare animals in books by showing students a variety of books that include animals in their natural habitats and animals that are pretend Show pictures of animals to students If the animal is real, students make its sound If the animal is a pretend animal, students put place a finger over his/her mouth

32 Games Dominoes Bingo Sink or Swim: Split class into 2 teams Correct Answer—able to select 1 player to sink or rescue a team member Wrong Answer—person sinks and goes to the middle Winner—all members are sunk Millionaire: Split into 2 teams. Students write questions for the other team. Ask a qualifying question. The first student to stand and give the correct answer goes to the hot seat. Student answers question for their team. They have lifelines—ask the audience, phone a friend, eliminate 2 choices, look up an answer. Head of the Class: Students are split into four teams and line up in four rows with their whiteboards. Students are asked several science questions. They record their answers on the whiteboard. If the student gets the answer correct, they stay and move to the back of the line. If the student gets the answer wrong, they sit down. The team with the most players left is the winner. Stick It To Me!: Put the number of craft sticks in the bag that correspond to the number of questions. Rotate around the room, allowing a student to draw a stick and answer the corresponding question. If they answer correctly, they keep the stick. If they answer it incorrectly, the stick is returned to the bag. Gold star—Get another turn Lightening bolt—Lose a turn Sad face—Lose all of your sticks The student with the most sticks at the end of the game, wins. 32
